ROG Strix 1080

DELTAprime

Asus have announced their ROG Strix 1080. I'm thinking of taking a chance and getting this instead of a blower design just because I have no confidence in the Nvidia's cooler (Silverstone have told me a blower will work better than open fan in my case, but fans should still be fine). I'm wondering if anyone thinks thermal or power throttling will be an issue with the design shown on Asus' site.

No, there won't be a problem. People only say to get a blower cooler for a compact PC is to protect those precious VRMs.

I don't you'll have a problem other than the inside of your case running a little bit hotter.

You are going to heat soak you case and definitely not get what you where hoping for. Blowers work in SFX cases like yours because the vent heat out the back.. The fans will just be recirculating the heat into the Gap compartment, thus soaking the sinks slowly... You will still end up throtting due to that...

I've been trying to heat soak my case using my EVGA non-reference 970 (OC) since last night and I can't get it to heat soak, the 970 runs at the OC turbo clock constantly in games and at 78c. I know it's a 30w lower TDP but after Silverstone let me know that the case works fine with fan based cards I'm not worried about that. Remember the RVZ02 has a separate chamber for the graphics card.

I'm just worried that the Strix 1080 will have a similar issue to the Founders Edition 1080 heat soaking the card even in test benches because I've read that the Asus Direct CU III coolers on the 980ti are bad coolers.

Be cautious with Asus, they fucked the 900 Series with coolers that didn't even bother with VRAM and power designs that choked the GPU so it throttled.

If you're looking for great cooling, so 3 fans, look at Gigabyte and maybe Zotac. Also Inno3D and Colorful.

MSI also fked up one their 970 models. Zotac is another one that made a gimped PCB that basically wouldn't allow OCing. EVGA also screwed up with the heatpipe thingy.

Now, I don't like Asus' stuff much, but you gotta be fair with everyone.

Wow, boost to 2025MHz without overclocking the card. Impressive! I wonder if it can hit 2200MHz with some tweaking.

It has much better VRM and cooling than the FE. It will hold its boost. Want to bet 10 bucks?

I would sure love to have a pair of these, but lol £700 each, no way.

I wasn't aware MSI did anything wrong. Neither Zotac, not that I keep much of an eye on Zotac anyway.

I knew EVGA fucked up and botched their first batch of 970's with shoddy coolers and a useless heatpipe.

So almost everyone fucked up their 900 cards in some way, hopefully the 1000 cards work out better.

Right, its still too much for me. I'll wait for Volta, 970 SLI should be good for another year, or two at medium settings.

Yeah I'd like to see more reviews because they might have just simply lost the silicon lottery with that card.

If other reviews backup the results in that review tho I might look at the MSI (unfortunately I think the EVGA is hideous).

Too bad Asus still uses the shitty design where the heatpipes have gaps between them with contact of the GPU die. >:( ffs Asus, you'd think you'd learn your shit before repeating the same old garbage. They just lost a customer, as I was seriously interested. Not gonna pay $600+ for shitty QC. My money will go to EVGA or the MSI Gaming X... possibly Zotac/Galax.
