Will a SATA II cable work just as well as a SATA III cable for a 7200 rpm hard drive?

Lisa.Lisa
Go to solution Solved by Enderman,

there is no such thing as a sata 2 or sata 3 cable

its just a sata cable

I just got a new 7200 rpm hard drive but realized I don't have an extra SATA III cable, However I do have an old SATA II cable.

I read a few places that for a 7200 rpm hard drive, a SATA III cable wouldn't be any faster than a SATA II cable.

So I'm wondering if I should wait until I can buy a new SATA III cable or if I should just use the SATA II cable?

AFAIK the cables actually aren't any different, but regardless it shouldn't matter since even a SATA II port shouldn't bottleneck any HDD

haha really it's all the same cable? I didn't realize that. So the differences lie in what they're connected to then?

Thank you, I'm happy I can reuse my old cables and not have to wait to order a new one.
