To all amd gpu users (driver related temps)

calieburger

Good day ladies and gents.

I've purchased a R9 390 gigabyte G1 edition about 16 months back and it's been serving me well.

Now like we all know amd gpu's tend to be on the hot side. My gpu's usually averaged around 88-96 c at full load. Now I know this is hot and I knew that is what I would be getting then came the new gpu drivers from amd.

It started around the release of the new crimson drivers which got all us amd fanboys excited. Eversince the new drivers installed I've been getting really low temps around 70-83 c it's quite a massive jump down for me and just to be clear my system hasn't changed in anyway since before the new drivers.

Now what I am wondering is has anyone of you guys experienced the same thing or is it just me?

It may have been a change to the fan profiles in Crimson.

Maybe the drivers just made the fan curve more aggressive? (and I don't know...not using stock coolers/'after market' coolers, using 'custom' coolers :P)

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

I've been using msi afterburner since day one so it's probably not that

Assuming you're putting the same amount of load on the GPU and you haven't changed cable management/added any fans I honestly have no idea. Though seasonal differences might have something to do with it.

If you've not touched anything and only the drivers changed then probably is ambient temps being lower :P

You picked one of the worst manufacturers to get an AMD card from, no wonder you're hitting the 90s under load. If you had a card from a decent manufacturer like Sapphire you wouldn't go past 75C under load in most situations.

Or the fact that the Gigabrick 390 is bad (something to do with the BIOS and the cooler)

I don't get why people don't like the card. I do get that the voltages are locked which sucks but the cooler is actually quite good and at the time of purchase there were no other variants of the card available because of where I live

Try to see if the temps become high again when you revert to the old drivers.

Keep an eye on vcore and fan tachometer when you do it.

lately been able to use a more aggressive overclock with lower temps

i just chalked it up to my 9590 not being in the case anymore lol

Same here, just updated drivers and idle temps went up 10c and I always use custom curves guess I will use an older driver. It has nothing to do with the time of year or any fan curve changes just a shitty update. (Using a Msi r9 280)

Custom curve's are the way to go with AMD card, i don't like how my card keeps the fans off until it hits 70c, i prefer a small amount of fan noise (40-50% fan speed) and 55-60c.

To Answer the OP, it could be the AMD frame rate limiter kicking in stopping the card reaching full load, by default i think its set to 55fps, You may have accidently turned this on. It has a huge effect on temps.id recomend using it if you only have 60hz screen and play with Vsync off if you are sensitive to lag.

Well...not ALL AMD GPU's run hot.

My two HD 7970's (Sapphire Vapor-X and Dual-X coolers) never exceeded 70*C while under 100% load (e.g. Unfeminine Valley).

My current Sapphire Nitro R9-Fury only max's out at about 53*C with 50*C fan speed while stressed under Unigine Valley or 3D Mark (2013? the latest version). Driver version 16.3.

It could be that the "Auto" fan speed control was adjusted in the later driver versions, so they run a little big faster (e.g. 30% instead of 20%).

Of course, driver optimizations / improvements could also have some contribution -- don't quote me on this one, though.

The same thing happened to me when upgrading to crimson and I am on a stock 290x (the 290/x has a higher power draw and worse heat problems than the 390/x). I went from low 90's to high 70's without changing a thing. I think they just found a way to make the cards consume less power on a bios level or something.

They used a cooler that was weaker than the ones on Geforce Nvidia. Their G1 AMD cards did not live up to the name that they've built. That is a disappointment.
