Looking For a Great PSU

Go to solution Solved by aisle9,

Corsair's RM650 can usually be had for around $100, and the higher-end RM650i for about $120. Otherwise, yeah, XFX and Seasonic are your best bets if you can't get your hands on an EVGA unit.

I am looking for a reliable PSU that will last for quite a while. I need it to be modular. At least 550W and 80+ bronze. I would like a PSU for around US$100 or below, but if you recommend a PSU that is over my budget with better "bang for the buck" I would certainly consider it.

EVGA G2 650w?

Anything from seasonic and XFX (that's not a XT but that's not modular anyway so...)

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

Thanks but where I live (Hong Kong) you can never find anything from EVGA D:

Seasonic or XFX? XFX PSU's OEM is Seasonic so they are basically the same with a different shroud :D (can't be bothered listing any right now as I can't remember any of the top of my head...)

You can try looking at superflower. They're the oem for well known Evga models.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Except the regular RM (yellow unit) is very poor for what you pay for it. The RMx and RMi are much better for the money.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Check out the PSU whitelist in my sig.

After the manufacturer switch, the RM's problems have supposedly been fixed. I haven't tested one out myself, but the consensus I've read seems to be that newer RMs are perfectly good units, while ones purchased used or old, old stock are from a manufacturer with poor quality caps, build quality issues, etc. If one can afford an RMi, by all means, buy an RMi. No question it's a better PSU.

And oh, the stories I could tell you about Antec HCGs that would certainly take them off your whitelist.

They're older units and still poor value for money when the RMx isn't drastically more money. If the OP can only get decent Corsair PSUs where they live then that's fine, but the RM is still not great for what you pay for it, even if it's the third gen unit.

The Antec HCG is based off the Seasonic M12 which is a popular group regulated design. I doubt that the problems you've had were to do with the PSU.

Actually, there's nothing else they could have been, and tests of the second faulty PSU on different machines proved it conclusively. But that's a topic for another thread, I suppose.

Could have been lack of surge protection from the wall or from a surge protector (or a cheap one), could have been a single faulty unit (which it sounds like you had), could have been a number of things. There always will be duds. I've used a few in several builds and have no problems with any of those PCs - as anecdotal as your situation.

RMx is still better.
