the 980 outperformed the 780ti

nvidia has said the 1080 perfoms better than the titan x

Preliminary benchmarks suggest around 30% better performance than the Titan X or 980 Ti, and about 60% better than the 980.

 

It's best to wait for benchmarks, it is a little early to decide.

The 1070 might very well have 7 of higher speed but 8GB total of VRAM if it too uses a reduced memory bus width like the 970 does, that is reasonably likely

 

Ultimately just on die shrink alone the numbers Nvidia has given seem pretty reasonable. They may very well be cherry picked but its going to be thereabouts, its bang in line with a silicon die shrink its not going to be an enormous lie and actually the 980 ti is really much faster. But the reduced memory bandwidth might make certain scenarios the 980ti gains or even faster, performance is always more complicated than just compute performance as we see with AMD Fury cards being beat by 980 ti's despite apparently much better specs.

Fair enough. The OP is asking whether the 1080 is a better choice than the 980 Ti; one thing we know for sure is that it is better, no matter by how much.

 

If the OP is happy with returning the card for a refund and getting the new 1080, that's a good choice. If he plans to get a refund and buy the 980 Ti again when it's at lower prices, that's also a good choice, I hope you'll agree with me here.

 

Agreed, NVIDIA's benchmarks are a pile of garbage and quoting them was silly of me.

my guess is the GTX 1080 will be slightly faster than my overclocked GTX 980ti at the beginning...and over time...it will get noticeably faster. :)

...and then, boom nvidia will launch the big papa...pascal GP100 and this one will make the GTX 1080 look like a slow ass whiny POS. :)

of course it won't be 2 times as fast as a titan X...even the GP100 chip that is slated to release next year will not be 2x a titanX in games...no way.

i think the GTX 1080 will be anywhere from 15% to 25% better depending on the scenario...no more than that.
