AMD Crossfire in pcie x16/x1?

Hi everyone,

I have a (pretty cheap) motherboard with 1 pcie x16 2.0 slot, 1 pcie x1 2.0 slot and 1 pci slot. I currently have a Radeon R7 240 and want to add another card. But because I only have 1 x16 slot, I was wondering if I can use a riser to put another GPU into the x1 slot and use the two in crossfire. If so, would it be bottle-necked by the x1 speeds?

If there is only one PCI-e 16x slot then that's the only slot you can use for GPUs. A riser would make it look like it's being plugged into a 16x slot but it will only be 1x electronically so you will starve that cards for bandwidth.

Unless you get an externally powered riser, no.

A PCI-e x1 won't provide enough power to a R7 240

Yesssss and noooo

The slot has a max bandwidth of 1x where it would even starve a 240 :P so...even if the slot was able to power the card, you won't be able to do much with it.

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

Well, you can use it in the x1 slot :P (if you power it), like shit, but would work

Also... are 240s even """qualified""" for crossfire?

Pretty sure you can crossfire them but 1x is simply not enough bandwidth for any GPU :/

I see the R7 240 won't do well over crossfire or pcie x1.

What is a recommended card for an AMD FX-6300? (My cpu, I did a budget build)
