I would keep all the hardware just for having it :D

Maybe it is just me, but I love having old hardware, especially if it´s something from my old PCs

Please quote me in any answers to my posts, so that I can read them easily and don´t forget about them. Thanks!

I love spending my time with PC tinkering, networking and server-stuff.

you might be surprised - a Q6600 is still a decent CPU for general use and even some older games.  Even though the motherboard will be SATA II, you could throw an SSD in there and something like 9800 GT and play older games just fine, and for general use it would be as good as any cheapo machine you could build new

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

If you don't want it, I'll take it. I'll pay for shipping....

EDIT: I'm collecting parts for building a Beowulf cluster for F@H.

A Q660 isn't useless, at all. You can probably sell it or use it.

well as an example, i have a very good gaming rig in my office, in my bedroom i have an itx build with athlon 5350 and gtx650 and in the lving room i have a nuc as an htpc and an xbox one. im fairly set for media and gaming.

was thinking i may sell it while its still of use to someone else if its still a capable processor and i keep seeing people discuss them so that may be the option to go with. id hate to waste it when someone else could enjoy it.

whats the advantage of building a router, and how would i?

pros:
no cap on the amount of device that can be connected at one time. just add nic's as needed

more customabilty then your standard router

better security options making hashes and encryptions, whatever

can run antivirus software through your router protecting multiple devices from one location.

community support for whichever firmware you choose make troubleshooting issues much easier.

better network monitoring

cant forget its fun to do

con:

the biggest and most relative con is the custom built router is going to pull more power from the wall vs your standard router.

to set it up. all you need is a firmware. then configure it to your liking.

some firmware's would be:

pfsense

smoothwall

untangle

clearos

ipcop

tomato

zentyal

all of these firmware work it just depends on what extra features you want and weather or not you what a GUI.

I've got an i7-920 that may or may not still work (it's Schrodinger's i7) and the tower cooler from the HP box it lived in from 2009-2016. They sit in a place of honor on my desk hutch.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.
