High, I was wondering whether I should go with a X99 build or a Z170 build. I was also wondering if a motherboard compatible with a 5960K will be compatible with future generation Intel extreme edition processers. This build will be used for Gaming, rendering, and video editing.

How much of your time is video editing and rendering? If only a small amount, I'd go with the Z170 because cheaper. AFAIK Gigabyte released recently some new boards that are compatible with the broadwell-e cpus, on older boards it can be or not after bios update (depends on whether the manufactuer wants you to buy a new board, then he'll supply a bios update or not)

The 5930k is not worth the money until you have many gpu's, 5820k is fine

Personally I wouldn't go X99 but I'd also never run a full 40 lane set up.

Should do. Kaby will use the same as Skylake and Broadwell-E will use the same as Haswell-E.

Already confirmed, Z170 will support KabyLake.

X99 also Supports in the near future Broadwell-E, the 6800ks ( the new 5820k ) last I checked was actually a somewhat fair price.

i would go with X99 because 10 core I7 is on its way :P

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

You'll want to go x99 if budget allows.

Some looks into Broadwell-E IPCs have shown some great improvements over Haswell-E to the tune of 10% or more.  With that said, clock for clock, you can expect Broadwell-E to be on par with Skylake for gaming and well ahead in the productivity you mentioned in your initial post.

For rendering and editing, X99 will yield MUCH better results. It can also be overclocked to match/exceed skylake. I just built my PC and went with X99. I mainly did it because Z170 is so mainstream and I wanted to be special lol but it's really your choice. It all depends how much time you'll be rendering/editing. If you do a youtube video every week or two, go with 6700K. If you do it more than 2 days a week, you will see great improvements on X99. imo.

The clock speed of an x99 chip when overclocked will beat the clock of an overclocked z170, while still having more cores.

Definitely go x99 for far better rendering times and comparable if not better game performance.

As much as I want that to be true, that's definitely not the case with Haswell-E vs Skylake.  Broadwell-E vs Skylake will be a whole different story, but as it stands, single core performance clock for clock goes to Skylake.

I do agree that OP should go with x99 due to the workload he'll be doing.
