Star Citizen?!?!

I've heard a lot about this game. Would anyone care to explain how this game works/plays? thanx:)

Star Citizen will be a space sim with FPS elements. Currently it's still in the Alpha phase, but is playable. You can get in by buying (pledging) a ship package, which will grant you access to your hangar, Arena Commander (the combat focussed mode where you battle AI or humans) and the first taste of the Persistent Universe where you can fly around in a huge map which will expand to be the "main" game.

Please take a look on the official website, it contains so much more information than I can post here https://robertsspaceindustries.com/

We also have an organization, the LTT Conglomerate. The threads you'll find in this subforum will mostly be about that ;)

Thanks, I'm considering buying it. One more question though, is the game well optimized for 4k etc?

it would be easier to go onto the website and just read, there's so much to know about star citizen. https://forums.robertsspaceindustries.com/

Here's a basic run down though:
Star Citizen is currently in alpha stage, meaning its not close to being finished, but it is open development so that we can play and test with CIG (the studio that makes it) throughout the creation process.
As of now there are only a few game modes:
-Arena Commander which is a mode in which you battle ships in free for all, on teams, or against the vanduul which are the villains of star citizen (single seater ships only for now)
- PU (Persistent Universe) which is the actual universe in which we will all be playing where you can fly around your ship, do missions, shoot people on satellite arenas, hang out etc. etc... So far we only have 1 planet and some moons to hang out around but its still probably bigger than any game you've ever played considering i think its 1 million km by 1 million km by 250k km at the moment.
- Racing, which is basically exactly what it sounds like, you race ships on a track.

Some ships are expensive but you dont have to buy them, they will all be able to be earned in the Universe at some point with in game credits, any cost on the ships that exist now is just to further the development and will not be pay to win when its released.
You can buy the base package for 40ish dollars and that gives the a ship, some credits to begin with (when money is implemented which i think is coming next patch) a few months insurance for your ship and the full game.

There is a single player in development but it isnt out yet called squadron 42, and there is also a first person shooter mini game that isnt implemented yet, but it doesnt mean you cant shoot people in the verse ;).

when the game releases, when you die you die for good and your possessions pass on to your next of kin or character you've designated, it doesnt mean you lose everything. just that character, the game wants to feel like it has some weight to the decisions you make. Currently i believe other than the one planet we have right now there are 140ish star systems planned for development and roughly 10 planets per system, results may vary.

Thats all i can think of right now haha if you have any other questions though ill answer them.

Optimization? What's that? :P

No, Star Citizen is in no real way optimized for pretty much anything right now. It can really be a resource hog. People are struggling to get decent FPS in the PU with very high end video cards. I'm not even sure if it has a 4k option enabled now.

But is has come a long way. Arena Commander is mostly very smooth for me FPS wise, but there is a rubber banding issue going on at the moment. We expect the Alpha 2.4 update/patch very soon, which will add some real nice things, but can very likely break many others.

If you go for it, know what you go into. It's Alpha for a reason and we're its test subjects ;)

The game doesnt release till late 2017 right now so probably nothing we have at the moment will run it properly at 4k when its going to be designed for hardware out 1 or 2 years from now

there is no card that can run the demanding AAA games at 4k on highest settings, and starcitizen is a very demanding game (and not fully optimized yet).

right now the hangar and the arenas run fairly well on my gtx 980 at 1440p. the universe itself is seeing low frames but thats not from bad game optimization so much as they need to optimize the servers to handle the sheer enormity of the game. Being and alpha it breaks and they fix it and it breaks and they fix it and so on. Before you get into star citizen at this very moment, ask yourself whether you have the patience to deal with how buggy an alpha is. Otherwise if you still decide to join, the LTT has an orginization in star citizen and we are always recruiting. You are welcome to talk to us on our discord server, theres a thread with this information in the star citizen forum here :)

Star Citizen is one of, if not the most demanding game to run out there. Any card currently out would have trouble running it at 4k at playable framerates (45-60). You should have a very enjoyable (and beautifully looking) experience at 1080p though.

If you just want to try out the game the $45 (last i checked) starting pack comes with a Aurora/Mustang/some other ship and also comes with alpha access and the full game. Price and alpha access could change though, I think I've been a pledger for 1.5-2 years now.

There are a few starter packs, like the Aurora MR and the Mustang Alpha. These are very good to start with, as it gets you the game and a ship that might not be the best, but will get you from A to B.

Later in line, you could start looking at the profession you'd like to do and the ships that are tied to it. Hauling, combat, smuggling, escort, mining; you name it!

Please be aware that the package split has already happened. In case you are unaware, the game Star Citizen, the multiplayer PU, is not going to include the standalone title Squadron 42 (singleplayer campaign-esque thingy), which costs an additional price. The campaign will have ties to the PU, including starting money, status, and npc relationships but it is neither detrimental nor necessary.

In terms of starter ships, you can either pick the Aurora MR or Mustang Alpha "starter" packages that include the ship, some UEC (In-game currency down the line), and a hangar, as well as a few more tidbits.

Most people, when upgrading from these ships, if you pick the Aurora, is Aurora MR -> Aurora LN (More militarized version; great all-around ship) -> Avenger Titan/Variants (Better handling and also a good all around ship) -> TO INFINITY!

If you choose the Mustang Alpha -> Mustang Beta (Exploration ship; think camper) -> Larger exploration ship

|

-> Avenger Titan/Variants -> TO INFINITY!

OR just do whatever you want...

Basic Common Ship stand-out attributes (Be aware some of these ships are unavailable now, but you can expect to see them in the mini-PU):

  • Aurora: Single person multi-role ship; flies like a brick; tanks damage like one too; tough little ship
  • Hornet: Single person fighter-oriented ship; Not very well-rounded; Tanks damage
  • Super-Hornet: Dual person fighter-oriented ship; most often used in Arena Commander
  • Gladius: Single person fighter-oriented ship; Slightly borked at the moment; Handles well
  • Mustang: Single person varied ship; Variants range from military to light transport; Handles extremely well; slightly borked
  • Mustang Delta: Single person fighter-oriented ship; Militarized version
  • M50: Single person racing ship; Extremely fast and agile; small loadout; made of paper
  • Avenger: Single person multi-role ship; Agile, handles well; A bit fragile; Slightly unbalanced at the moment
  • Freelancer: Multi-person freighter/exploration ship; 18-wheeler of the game; Will be able to carry lots of cargo in the future
  • Cutlass: Two-person (?) multi-role ship; pirate-y; versatile, jack-of-all trades; slightly borked at the moment
  • Vanguard: Two-person deep space fighter; No cargo; tanks damage; straight-line fighter
  • Retaliator: Large crew, long-range bomber ship; Think Flying Fortress
  • Khartu-Al: Alien scout ship; agile; giant hitboxes; big-ish guns; no flares
  • Sabre: Single person fighter-oriented stealth ship; Large loadout; Hard to hit; Stealthy in the future
  • Constellation: Large crew, versatile large ship; Used for exploration or hauling; Tanks damage
  • 300 Series ships: Single person multi-role(ish) ships; medium loadout; handles well; looks good(?)
  • 350R: Single-person racing ship; fastest ship in the game; handles slightly more poorly than the M50; loadout isn't great

That's about it... I think...

Anyway, sorry for the long-ish post. If you do decide to get it, check out LTT Conglomerate and hit us up on Discord. See you in the 'Verse!

As others have said, there is currently pretty much zero optimization for any hardware. You would be playing raw test builds.

There is an ongoing CPU bottleneck, with the game maxing out a single CPU thread and underutilizing the rest, no matter how many they are, and utilizing as low as 10-20% of available GPU power as a result, regardless of the kind of beast you have under your hood.

There are also still synchronization issues with server-client communication, the backend would sometimes enforce a lower framerate on clients in order to cope.

All in all - it is still very much a work in progress. That said, all games look like that in this stage of development - it's just that almost none of them have let their community play around with the early builds as we can. :) And performance issues aside - for a work in progress - it is pretty damn fun to play around with!
