Unless it's exponentially faster than an 820 it won't be able to handle emulation well.

It wasn't that successful. Intel has plenty of money to throw where it pleases. That doesn't mean its strategists are morons.

I didn't call them morons. Whatever the case, they ran out of Contra-Revenue money after all.

There is also the fact that running Win32 is only useful for Continuum and selling a mobile device solely on being stuck to a wall would be ridiculous. In addition, Centennial is supposed to solve the Win32 problem. 

 

In either case, Win32 or Continuum is not and should not be the main (or only) selling point of a mobile device. If it was, they've already lost. 

 

As for Atom, it doesn't seem to have a bright future unless Intel comes up with a way to sell them besides price (and related incentives)

APUs are the answer for (non gaming) laptops though....which make up the vast majority of laptop sales. So ceasing production of APUs would basically mean giving up the entire mobile market (which isn't a good idea if AMD wants to survive). As it is, id bet that laptop sales are doing a lot better than desktop sales.

 

The problem is that none of the APUs can really compete with intels offerings (sure, the gpu is better -- excluding Iris/Iris pro -- but that's not a big issue for most people).

Of course they could make money, but the largest market segment is using a computer with JUST integrated graphics and no dGPU at all. So the APU route is where the bulk of sales will occur, so giving up that market and solely focusing on users on need/want a dGPU isn't the answer.

This is something I have noticed a lot of people who are familiar with desktop stuff don't realize. Like in the MediaTek X30 thread we had a little while ago people just looked at the AnTuTu multithreading score and went "oh wow finally a competitor to Snapdragon!", but they don't realize that there is more to an SoC than just CPU performance.  Even if you also include GPU performance (which a lot of people seem to forget is an important part of an SoC) there are still a billion other things you have to get right to make a good SoC.

Competitive markets mean lower profit margins. They likely just found the smartphone market too competitive, with a lower profit margin than they can get in other industries where there's less competition.

To be honest, can don't know if it still stand true today, but historically, Intel have been misusing the term "SoC".

 

Patrick, that is some next level logic you are trying to pull. If Intels had the hardware, why would they bother to delay anything?

I think the issue is the difficulty of meassuring certain aspect of a SoC through a benchmarks, whereas a CPU/GPU benchmark is rather simple in comparison.

Small SoC are full of compromises (much more so than desktop-chips), and even so you excel in one area, that will have an effect on another important area.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the one hope windows phone had (and honestly it was a huge potential) was to get real windows on them so they didn't have to worry about the "no apps" issue... I guess that just died. :(

My 50 pence...

 

Intel has realised 2 important things.

 

1) Silicon is nearing the end of its usefulness for computer components and will have to be replaced in the near future. I've heard some writers says as soon as 2020, I don't buy that however Intel are positioned to be able to predict and guide this transition from silicon to whatever will replace it, their foundry is the most cutting edge CPU manufacturing plant on the planet after all.

 

2) They've likely realised that Smart devices will soon be all but obsolete. Its predicted that in the future all our computing will be done on the cloud and the devices we carry and use will just be dumb terminals used to display the data that was crunched by the cloud servers which will put less emphasis on the processing power of devices and instead increase emphasis on screen real estate, wireless capability and storage capacity and speed.

 

These 2 reasons are (IMO) the reason why Intel appears to be beginning a huge restructure of their company putting less focus on increasing power and more focus on efficiency, as time goes on and cloud computing takes over efficiency will be much more important to us than processing power.

Running real Windows wouldn't solve anything unless you only buy the device for the Continuum feature. Using Win32 apps on a 5" touch screen would be awful, hence the requirement to be stuck to a desk to utilize Win32 support would make it a niche device.

I realize this is functionally no different than the apps for ARM not existing at the moment, but it just takes devs to build a proper "tablet mode" for their programs.  Some already offer it - larger buttons on the UI and so on.  And even if it is super awkward, having that extra functionality of virtually any application you can imagine on your phone would be pretty nice :)
