Touch ID may have just been hacked

amiah137

According to http://istouchidhackedyet.com/ and http://www.macrumors.com/2013/09/22/chaos-computer-club-bypasses-apples-touch-id-system/ apparently Apple's TouchID has been hacked.

What are your thoughts?

I don't let anyone touch my phone in the first place.

And I doubt anyone at my university or work is smart enough to hack it.

Yes but what about your phone being stolen?

what if someone nicked your phone, also look at that second link mate, doesn't look that hard to 'hack' not really hacking at all just using what looked like some thin rubber to make the prints that are already on the device seem like a finger...

PROFILEYEAH

What do people even put in these things?

You can use some app through iCloud that locks people out of a phone.

For the 5S it seems in order to get in through the fingerprint scanner, you have to have the fingerprint.

I constantly clean my phone. Can't lift a good print off it. If you're stealing my phone, you're not going to get my print too.

Then I just lock you out through iCloud.

I don't think that's a good enough reason not to own a phone. If you don't want to, you can always do what you want, but for me and (I'm going to guess) most people, it's just too impractical not to own a phone on the off chance someone is going to bother stealing your fingerprint.

Why not make a private parts scanner.

Nobody would dare to try and unlock it.

And when you want to unlock it just zip open your pants and scan it, voila.

A little awkward but it works.

The funny thing is if you need a fingerprint to copy, there are plenty all over the phone to choose from...

Well I agree, its not enough of a reason (having FP scanners) to not have a phone. Its not the actual reason I don't have one...

I seriously do not need one (for now and the previous 3 years), time will tell of course. But I work from home, have my home phone.

One day...maybe...

Still don't like the idea of someday these scanners are default standard fare... regardless on how you see it being used or not...

How the hell do people let their phone get stolen...I just don't get it...I know where my phone is at all times, if you're completely careless with your phone then have it stolen, it's your fault. Also why would someone go through all this trouble to unlock the phone?

would a high DPI copy really be considered a "hack"?

i thought they needed to break the software to be considered a hack, do they still get the reward?

It can happen. Having a phone stolen isn't always going to be the result of carelessness, either.

Pretty much this. It isn't surprising that someone has already found a way to "cheat" the sensor. I'd still consider it to be a pretty secure method to lock your phone.

I don't see the finger print scanner as a fix all way of security but of a easier way to keep your spouse, friends, non-tech smart villains out of your phone. Really don't expect to lose a phone and have these guys find it.

An easier option would be to not have a smartphone in the first place.

Wasn't there a $15,000 reward for the first person who did this? If so, he just got a few bucks in his pocket.
