I think that the game is so popular because it is not a overly immersive as COD or like battlefield. With the low System requirements it is a game for everyone. While COD you can run into many and child that should be doing their homework not playing video games. ( I always laugh when I hear their parents Mom: "IM GIVING ONE MORE SECONED TO GET OFF THE PLAYSTATION BEFORE I COME IN THEIR!!!!!) then they go Son: "mommy I'm busy" the awe shit switch just got hit. Mom: " ONE..........TWO...........THREE!!!1!!!!!!!111!!. Than Boom, Mom: "I told you to get of that thing" (takes PlayStation) Son: "But mom" Mom: "you be quiet or I'll ground you!!!!!" ) I can't believe that I just wrote that. I'm just going to go now.

It is very basic which means you can disect it more in more ways and become good at very specific things and more pure skill is involved rather then lots of factors and elements to the game like bots and environment. Also it is easy to run and cheap

It is skill based (20% of the reason), it is cheap (50% of the reason), you can earn money from selling drops especially when new operation comes out (0.1% of the reason) and it has SKINS ! (30% of the reason). 

 

I think CSGO is best known for its stupid SKINS (stupid because of the value they have been given not the SKINS themselves, $1000 AWP dragon lore skin that doesn't even look worth the value...pfff, knives that cost 10-20 times more than in real life etc..).

 

Also it is super easy to run even on a toasters. So whole Eastern Europe is all over it (75% of the community are Russians on their cheap laptops with potato mics, not racist, it's just true. 9/10 servers I join are filled with Russians).
