100mbps when Ethernet but 40 when wireless?

Go to solution Solved by Iankiller99,

Well I found a reddit post that may help you, one person said that the tz series of routers are their budget models, and the advertised speeds are often higher than the actual speeds. Effectively your router most likely bottlenecking your speed. Also your router is pretty old, I could hardly find any hardware specifications. The manufacturer deleted the product pages so that didn't help. Either way i'm still an advocate of if you can connect via Ethernet than do.

https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/20wkw1/how_fast_is_the_sonicwall_tz_potential_bottleneck/

I recently got Suddenlink cable installed at my house, when I plug my pc directly into the Ethernet I get over 115mbps. I bought the 100mbps package. The Arris modem they installed only has one Ethernet jack so I have to use a wireless router for all the other devices to use it. When on the wireless from the router, I only get about 50mbps and under, sometimes dropping as low as 3mbps!!!!

What's happening? When my pc is directly into the modem its 100mbps the entire time 24/7. Yes, the router is rated for speeds of over 100mbps.

Also, what is the difference between these two routers?

By your ISP, I know my ISP used to throttle me when I used a lot of bandwidth.

Okay, well can you help my out by telling me which router is better?

A: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122581&cm_re=netgear_nighthawk-_-33-122-581-_-Product

B:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704232&cm_re=archer_c9-_-33-704-232-_-Product

They seem to have relatively the same types of technology/speeds. So why is one $180 and one is $130?

It depends on if you have multiple devices using the wifi at the same time. The devices share bandwidth. Lets just say for example you have a router that is rated at 54mbps. The quoted wireless bandwidth is the total bandwith for that the AP can provide, and is half duplex. So the AP can handle no more than, for example, 54mbps of data. It doesn't matter how that traffic is distributed, 54 clients each sending 1 mbps or 1 client sending 54mbps etc. Very few wireless networks can ever achieve their full quoted data rate. It heavily depends on signal strength, which includes things like distance from router, materials the signal has to pass through, etc..

My best advice is if you can use Ethernet to connect to your network then do, at least on your main pc, it will provide maximum speed and reliability. If you can't connect directly to your router, then maybe buy a cheap switch and connect via that.

You should try making a reset on your router first. It seems like that is the issue, but it does not necessarily have to be replaced.

You mean simply unplugging it and plugging it back in?

No, I mean doing a factory reset. There should be a small hole on the back labeled reset. Try pushing that button with like a toothpick, paperclip or something (the button is usually inside a small hole so that you don't accidentally press it). You will need to hold the button down until you notice that the lights turn off or start blinking in a way they didn't do before. It usually takes around 10 seconds.

I cant do that because my dad has some specific settings on it. He's an IT guy.
