Should I clock my FX 8320 higher?

Hello guys,

This is a pretty straight forward question: Should I go higher?

HW is:

FX 8320

Mobo  is Gigabyte   GA-990FXA-UD3  rev4.0 with latest bios

CPU cooler Cooler Master Hyper 412s

Case CM N400 (two fans, 1 push, 1 pull)

If your temps under load are around 50C go ahead.

When you hit about 80 under load stop

Personally I don't think there's a maximum safe voltage, as long as temps stay under 80°C under the heaviest load you can put on your CPU (in my mind AIDA64 FPU only is about as heavy as it gets) you shoudl be good.

yeah, I read that I should stay below 62 degrees C on Package and 71 degrees C on the socket. Correct?>

Yeah, people confuse AMD with Intel chips. It's the old "stay under 80" doctrine. Éh @Godlygamer23

4.4 should be enough. @Prysin can tell you the exact drop off point for FX

I just set it to 4,6 . Will run the AIDA stress test for 10-ish minutes and post results.

Yep. You're well informed on that.

 

As for voltage you can go as high as 1.55V 24/7 IF you can cool it but most people find diminishing returns after 1.475V or so. Decent chips should do around 4.7/4.8 with those volts.

i have my own FX 8320 at 4.62GHz, works fine at 1.45-1.46vcore

that drop-off is unique to every CPU.

OK, I just BSOD'd . I think I should not be using automatic voltages :D

It was cool with auto voltage at 4.3 , but 4.6 BSODd 1 minute into aida.

I wouldn't suggest doing that no. Auto voltage will usually overcompensate for clock speed.

Well 100MHz is 100MHz. It doesn't become slower after so many steps. Merely the volt investment isn't worth the performance increase and that is on a chip by chip basis. Usually it's between 1.475 and 1.5 on these but there are exceptions.

it never gets worse. Like @harrynowl said, the "drop off" is tied to when you are using too much voltage to get the next 100MHz... Thus kicking out way more heat.

 

For me, its fine running it at 4.62GHz now that ive bothered to dial in my voltages a bit more precisely. however i need way less voltage to reach 4.4GHz then 4.62GHz.... HOWEVER, the performance drop going from 4.62GHz to 4.4GHz is near 12%... which is a bit ridiculous of a performance cost

You still have a bit of headroom left, but not too much, since Temperature >> CPU is showing a maximum of 56*C.

Manually set your voltage to 1.38V ~ 1.4V and try again with 4.5 GHz or 4.6 GHz.

Keep in mind, the Core Voltage will vary between CPU to CPU (i.e. I can get 4.8 GHz / 4.9 GHz with 1.40V on my FX-8350...but needs ~1.5V for 5.0 GHz...which is too much for my current CPU cooler).

 

For the sake of easy troubleshooting:

  1. Disable APM Mode in the UEFI BIOS (APM = Application Power Management)
  2. Enable HPC Mode in the UEFI BIOS (HPC = High Performance Computing)
  3. Disable "Turbo Core", "Cool N Quiet", and "C1E" in the UEFI (you can re-enable them again later if you want)
  4. Adjust your Load-Line-Calibration so your CPU Voltage so it is as stable as possible, and as close to the voltage that you set, when running a stability test in AIDA64
    ** Rev 4.0 and the latest UD3 R5 should have Load-Line-Calibration settings in the UEFI **
  5. Decreasing the CPU-NB (listed as HT Link in CPU-Z) from 2600MHz down to 2400MHz or 2200MHz will slightly help with stability
    ** Higher CPU-NB has very minor effects on performance -- more specifically RAM -- on socket AM3+ CPUs **

 

Just digging up my *never completed* review / comparison...tested the effects of CPU-NB between socket AM3 Phenom II X6 1090T, and AM3+ Fx-8350.

Hmm I don't seem to be successful with increasing fan speed on my CM Hyper 412s.

I've downloaded the tool that Gigabyte provides : EasyTune6 (from Gigabyte site), but I can only play with the SysFan1 curves/slopes.

It's fairly quiet so I think I can afford to increase its speed buy 10-20%.

Do not use auto voltage. It works fine for lower clocks - but simply will not work when pushing the limits. 

 

temperatures are key. My chip likes to freeze above 65c. push voltage up to your thermal limit and test for stability while upping the frequency after success.

I am not trying to find it's limits, I just wanted to do light OC, and from what I experienced 4.4 is just too easy :)

Atm I just wanna increase the fan speed a bit so I can have it a bit cooler, since it runs a bit hotter when system temperature increases due to the GPU being stressed aswell (during gaming)
