April Fools Joke

First, let me get this out there.  I love LTT, and all the content LMG makes.  I think it's quality content, which is why I buy their merch, and why I bought a premium Vessel account. 

 

Last night as you all know, Linus posted an April Fools video.  I think it was a kinda funny joke but it also came off as quite arrogant. 

Linus has been getting tons of flack from his fans lately about his content being "non-relatable, and not relevant".  I do feel sorry for him as he works hard to make us happy and I don't think he should be getting as much sh*t as he is getting. 

 

That being said much as I love @LinusTech, I gotta somewhat agree.  I only started watching Linus in early 2015, before the move - but looking back on the old videos I can see the difference.  I don't think it's so much the content quality or choices, but the humor.  The channel has gone from humorous to serious.  There aren't as many jokes, and I feel like that's why people aren't enjoying the videos as much anymore. 

 

When I saw the April Fools video, at first I forgot it was almost April Fools.  I just thought that Linus was mocking his fans in the comments - and it really annoyed me.  Once, I realized that it was April 1st, it mediated the issue a bit - but the issue still lies.  He's mocking people who criticize him - and while they may be a little to salty about it, they're not completely wrong.

 

Linus, I really love ya, but honestly..  Mocking your fans who criticize you?  Isn't that quite arrogant?  I would think it's not a very good idea, but I guess that's really up to you.

 

EDIT: Ok, listen guys.  I get that the video was a joke.  I'm not stupid and I personally wasn't offended by it.  I'm just saying that I would never think that mocking your fans criticism (even if they are a vocal minority) is a good idea. I'd just stay silent.  But really, that is up to Linus.

I got the joke behind it, I'm not stupid.  But he was mocking his fans.  There was an agenda behind it.

Exactly that. I completely understand where he is coming from. Besides, haters are going to hate, no matter what. You can't please everyone, so fuck it, just do what makes you happy.

I attribute the degradation of content to the huge hardware drought. There hasn't been any major hardware releases in months, so they have to scrape the bottom of the barrel until new stuff comes out to review/bench/overclock.

I already said that I'm not hating on his videos.  I love the content he makes, but I do believe he can improve.  Everyone can improve on everything.  It's just he seems to be mocking any of the (small) amount of constructive criticism he's getting.

There is that.  And I recognize that as a reason.  It's not entirely his fault.

And the content has been lacking. Luckily the new Scrapyard Wars seems fantastic based off of the first video, but in the future they need to adjust how they balance content.

 

Then again, that's much easier said than done.

Both sides of the jokes were making light of serious concerns. The native advertising deal they had with Nvidia resulting in a lot of product placement (and still does result in product placement) is currently being debated as to its legality in Canda, its already illegal in the USA and most of Europe but there are no guidelines in Canada yet despite the Canadian advertising agency suggesting they would decide last year on the issue. The content being meta (about LTT rather than technology) is something that has been popular to an extent but also unpopular. Ultimately one thing being made light of here is far more serious than the other, and while I see everywhere people making light of the content joke the Nvidia one considering what they actually did do in the past is a lot more concerning. Their lawyer if they had one would have told them making light of this was a bad idea.

Its called self deprecation, and it was just being funny, even if he WAS mocking them, so what? the people complaining are a vocal minority and what is wrong with being offended, nothing happens, if people dont like him, or the content, they can leave, the fact he is growing in subs wont effect him

If LTT view count, subscribers and earnings keep going up, despite all the complaining then they are doing something right

Look  at youtubers like TotalBiscuit, who is still popular despite getting SO much hate mail that he has turned off his reddit, YouTube comments and almost all social media presence 

people that hate stuff, or are jealous, or just want what they want seem to shout the loudest

Yes, and I love the 'about LTT' content.  I really do enjoy it.  I just think they need to find a perfect balance - and they're working on it.  I can see they're trying to balance everything out.

Yes. He has had cancer for a little while now. This is the second time that he's officially had it - however, he's been given a defined amount of time to live and is going through a lot right now. This form of cancer might actually end his life, and while many people hate him(and I can't necessarily blame them in some ways, despite enjoying 90% of his content), I don't wish death upon him, nor do I think it's fair for anyone to do the same.

Usually the first step to fixing a problem is admitting it.

Linus Media Group is so self-aware of it yet all they can do is mock the people who criticize it. I understand the day it is but mocking the ones calling you out isn't how you fix the issue at hand.
