EVGA GTX 970 SSC with i5-6600k

ZEBuckeye81

Hey guys, I'm about to put together my first build and have been watching for a gpu. This morning I saw Newegg has EVGA GTX 970 SSC for just over $300. The setup I'll be running is i5-6600k, Gigabyte ga-z170x-ud5, 8GB GSkill. I currently only have 1080p 60 hz monitor, however may be looking at a monitor upgrade down the line to 1440 or maybe 4k depending on prices.

I am wanting to know if this is a good card for the money and will give me good bang for my buck now and for a couple of years or so? I have read the R9 390 may be slightly faster, but runs hotter and draws more power. My other option would be to save a hundred bucks and go with a 960 or R9 380.

kyle from awesomesauce network showed that you could game on 4k with this GPU so yeah, i would go for it if you want 4k on the cheap in the future

For the record, 390 has better bang for the buck than the 970. As for temp., there are 390´s that run cooler than some 970s, I.E the sapphire 390, power consumption is higher however, so if power is quite costly where you are, worth considering the 970.

get the 390. it doesn't run that hot compared to a gtx 970. some 390 cards actually run cooler than a 970.

I would consider the 390. however, power consumption is higher than the 970 but its not bad.

I'm trying to stay relatively budget friendly - I honestly originally was looking at 960s or 380s, around $200. I however realize that if I bumped up to the next tier I'd get a bit more longevity in terms of high settings and good fps. The Sapphires I have seen (although I haven't looked much) were up around $400, which is just a bit too rich for my blood.

This 970 caught my eye with being just over $300. Now I do realize some of the 390s are also in the just over $300, however if I'm spending that much I want a quality card that is going to be efficient yet powerful (yes, I know those words don't go hand in hand very well...).

Pcpartpicker says $300 exact after mail in rebate: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/sapphire-video-card-100382ntoc2l

at this point we've seen enough gaming benchmarks to positively confirm that the R9 390 is a more capable graphics processor than the GTX 970.

it does consume a bit more energy, but it's faster especially if you are not going to push the GTX 970 in overclocking...which would negate it's power savings anyways.

If you don't need the nvidia features, get the R9 390.
