Fotga DP500IIS Follow Focus

Dredgy

Out of PC tech to review this week, so camera gear it is. Still a good video :) Next week back to tech.

A follow focus is a device to precisely and manually focus a lens. Very useful if you're thinking of doing YouTube videos - almost a necessity. The Fotga DP500IIS is a budget follow focus.

Pros

  • No play/deadzone
  • Good build quality
  • Userful dry eraser ring
  • AB Hard Stops
  • As good as follow focuses that cost $700+ (in the video I said it was a Varizoom, it was actually a Redrock)
  • Good accessory package

Cons

  • None really. It's a tool that does a job. And does it well.
  • Gears for photo lenses are tedious, but that's not unique to this follow focus. Just buy a cine lens.

Great video and commentary as usual

Looks really similar to my follow focus, however I LOVE the A B hard stop idea, that is SO useful, ive been doing it with a dry wipe market but having the physical stops is SO great

Agree about the clip on lens gears, they are utterly shit, if they were like a continuous elastic band it might work, but the clasp part always gets in the way (although I cut off the end of mine so that it only fits that specific lens which helps

@ShadowCaptain Hard stops were the main reason I spent the extra on this one, and glad I did. So useful to have if your lens doesn't have them.

Yeah absolutely! and just really helps with the workflow, especially for the kind of shots I do for reviews, takes out all the guess work and pratting around, just slam the product infront of the camera, set focus points, and record

Yes, my whole setup is geared for that, since I now shoot reviews on my only day off, the less set-up and inconvenience the better. And this wasn't exactly expensive. Considering the money I just dropped this week on a portable rig.

In a couple of months I should have a CN-E 30-300 review.

Samyang is a good alternative though :P

@ShadowCaptainI will be borrowing it from Canon - there are currently none in Australia with an EF mount.

Still a beast to even get a chance to look through
