I think the idea was to make it more color neutral and, by the look of it, to add a denser radiator and different fan on the shroud for (hopefully) better cooling performance?

Maybe to mach most PC colors? Most PC's are not gold.

the original fan is based on the reference design

which can be loud at high loads like a jet engine if you set it to 100%

and the radiator seems to be thicker

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Nope, they had a program where people could get the silver version of the faceplate and not the gold one. They are just now giving the silver version to everyone. http://www.evga.com/articles/00962/EVGA-HYBRID-Face-Off-Program/

I'd say probably for all the reasons stated above. I think it looks better imo

My Build: i7-4790K, 212 Evo, Asus Maximus VI Extreme, Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB DDR3-1600, Intel 730 240GB SSD, WD Blue 1TB, EVGA GTX 980Ti ACX 2.0, NZXT H440 Blue/Black, EVGA 650W 80+Gold.

Most of the time, it's not the computer, it's the person using it.

The before design was literally the reference.cooler with an AIO sticking out of it, cooling the GPU core. The reference fan blows air out and across.

The new fan seems to be a downward fan. Plus as mentioned before, the new shroud is to try to better match most PC aesthetics.

All that fan is doing is cool the VRMs...which is directly under where the fan is. The new fan is better suited for the task compared to the reference blower fan.
