Identify DDR Version by looking at the slot?

Go to solution Solved by tendstofortytwo,

The notches would be similarly placed to these images:

This is an interview question :

How would you identify the version of DIMM, compatible with the motherboard, by looking at the slot itself?

Answers, anyone?

Nothing to see here ;)

Where the notch is, they do have a different amount of pins but too hard to tell that on a slot

Interview for what? and it seems like a silly question

Oh! It's a casual 'interview' our Computer Science teacher asked us... But you can vaguely pinpoint the type of DIMM by the number and position of the notches, right?

I would never trust my guess, that's a really stupid question for your teacher to ask :P Is this highschool? at Uni we've been told that identifying it off the motherboard alone is too hard to be 100% right because ddr2 and 3 are very similar.

Ah yeah, you can get some pretty stupid stuff there. In my computer class, the cooking class had an identical assignment because the school viewed them both as "Technology Classes" so we had the food teacher marking our computer assignments (Giving us bad grades because she didn't know what was right and wrong) and the computer teacher marking cooking assignments....

There is a way, not through those notches. The answer is right in front of you, but most don't notice it.

I'd actually look at the socket, you can vaguely identify the ram by doing so. Except for LGA 775, which ranges from DDR1 to DDR3.

My monitor is the answer? 'cuz that's what's in front of me.

No seriously, what's the answer man? Riddles aren't my cup o' tea!

Go look extremely carefully at the ram slot and you will see something.

No, literally look at the ram slot itself.

Close but, nope that's not it. It's physically on the ram slot itself. Might need a magnifier to see it. :D

I don't see much more than the notch. Are you telling me to count the pins in the slot? Maybe my motherboard doesn't have what you're talking about...

Ddr2 and ddr3 both use 240pins, so no difference there.

They all have, goes back to ddr. If you see it then your a pro. Can't then forever be a newb no matter how good you are with computers. Basic identification of hardware parts.

Maybe i'll say the answer then or let you guys continue to find it. Notch position and pins counts are not it. :D

Mine says it right by the notch. The one MAJOR difference between all the generations of DDR.
