Intel CPU stock coolers

I see some people using Hyper 212s and the like with their locked Intel CPUs - is this necessary? Would it help extend the life of, say, an i5-6600? Like, post-warranty 3-4 years later?

One possible benefit is using your own fans on the hyper 212. Might make it run a bit quieter. As far as I know though, the stock fan keeps the cpu cool enough that there wouldn't be much of a life expectancy difference in switching.

I doubt you need it but it will be cooler so in theory yes longer life but a CPU normally is rare to die!

Stock cooler ran at 65-70*C at 80% load for me. 100% load resulted in 75*C. It's worth it, intel runs hot lately

Theoretically, the life span of the CPU with an aftermarket cooler will be more than one with the stock cooler, but honestly, the difference isn't noticeable.

 

The only benefits of an aftermarket cooler on a locked CPU is lower temps, lower noise levels and perhaps aesthetics. Otherwise, a stock cooler will do fine.

I've got a 212 on my i5 4690 because I edit videos. The stock Intel was really loud and temps were over 90C.

it's not about temps. only reason to get aftermarket cooler on a locked cpu is the noise.

yes, but that's not a reason to get a cooler. especially because 75C is NOT hot. My phone reaches that.

It's noisy - 2000RPM is definitely audible in a Silencio 650

not liking high temperatures is not a reason. it doesn't affect performance, only noise and your wallet. it's not a reason, it's preference.

... It is absolutely a reason.

Why the hell do reasons have to be purely functional?

If you had to choose between a black plain case and a gaudy transformer case, which one would you pick? Based on your current case, I'd be willing to bet you'd pick the black one. For what reason would you pick it? Because you like it more.
