How will video ram needs increase in the next few years?

Johnmakuta

I am looking at either investing in a set of 390Xs or a single 980 ti. I am really worried about my vram becoming too little because my GTX 770 with 2GBs is just not enough any more. So what I am wondering if I should go for the beefy 8 GBs of memory the 390Xs offer or the somewhat lesser 6GBs of the 980 ti. Basically my question is:

Are we going to start needed more than 4GBs of vram in the next 3 years? In three years will I be scraping by with 6GBs just hoping the next triple A titles don't require more than that to run at ultra settings?

Lord knows what the future is going to be, we may find new technologies and instead of GB fit different sizes.

Back to reality, i'd go with one 980 ti, even if the 390x's have more preformance not every game supports crossfire

if you play alot of indie games, go with a single gpu, cause most of em don't support crossfire

GTA 5 is known for using way more VRAM than it probably should. Properly optimized games shouldn't being using that much at all.

EDIT: With 1080p still being the most popular resolution for people with dedicated graphics cards we're at and around 2.5-3GB's on high settings in popular games.

For reference, both the Division and GTA V have used more than 4GB of VRAM just at 1080p for me. (The Division topped out at 5.2GB)

I actually think using more VRAM makes it more optimized in one sense as it keeps the graphical data ready to be used instead of reading from the disk. Just a thought as it depends on how fast open worlds load and how the person is moving in that world.

More optimized textures and texture rendering processes will require less VRAM. The engine GTA 5 is built on just doesn't handle VRAM well.

So smaller resolution textures?

personally i would take a 980ti, no not because im a fanboy or anything of that sort but 8gb's is insane and realisticially unless your running 4k or triple monitors your not gonna use it to add on that, if you are your probably running multiple cards. to be fair even 6gbs seems insane but from what i recall a 980ti is stronger than a 390x anyway (correct me if im wrong i cant remember the benchmarks off the top of my head for every card out there lol).

Regardless, 980ti takes my vote.
