I think this will be my first computer

So, I’m not currently a huge PC gamer(on an iMac) but I would like to get into it. I’m just a kid in college but I have allocated $1,200 for a new computer(w/o tax + shipping) that I can also use to study, watch youtube videos, work on excel, ect ect. I already have a great mechanical keyboard and a Razer Naga. I’ve been spending a lot of time on forums reading suggestions on what is good and what isn’t quite as great. I’m mainly attracted to value orientaded options enmeshed in quality and relaiblility.

Basically, I’m looking for outstanding bang for the buck 1080p gaming with 16GB RAM, decent processing power, and awesome life of the system. This will be my main, only computer for at least 5 years. Mind you:

  • I have a mechanical keyboard, mouse, and windows 7 key(to upgrade to Windows 10)
  • I have a Micro Center near me, so I have decided to get my CPU, GPU, case, and SSD there. (or whatever else is a great deal)
  • I really like g2 power supplies, from what I hear, but the prices have gone up (I suspect from the MSI Dream build that just ended)
  • I don’t need 16GB of ram, but I really, really want it.
  • All components must be available at Micro Center, Newegg, or Amazon.

As for the future(1-2 years after built) I will be looking to getting a 4k monitor and another r9 390, depending on how into gaming I become(why I picked a 850w PSU) Does this build allow that? Also as for overclocking, I will not be overclocking immediately, but I will overclock.

Here’s what I’m thinkin’

bulky as it won’t fit well? Or bulky as in too much power? If the latter, would it hurt the computer?

That's a pretty good idea. You COULD go 1440p now, but if you might want to just save your money for the future

He stated he will be upgrading to an additional 390, as such it would be budget oriented to include that in the price now instead of buying two power supplies.

My philosophy exactly! Theoretically, could I have a 2,000w and it not affect the system negatively?

Very true, if OP is looking to save money and use it elsewhere this would be a good place to do that.

Always leave room for overhead when it comes to psu's, 850 watts is fine and leaves room for upgrades in the future. Keep in mind a good psu can last you 10-15 years

When I watch people putting computers together on YouTube I've noticed a common theme. They seem to always save their SSD and PSU from the previous build. So, one can infer it's worth it to buy a quality ssd and power supply, no?

Yeah but for $260 I could get a 1440p monitor?

How much worse is 60hz from day to day stuff to let's stay proffesional level gaming compared to 120hz or 144hz?

would it be a considerable difference to an average gamer?

Yeah but for $260 I could get a 1440p monitor?

How much worse is 60hz from day to day stuff to let's stay proffesional level gaming compared to 120hz or 144hz?

would it be a considerable difference to an average gamer?

what's the point if you have a 1440p monitor but have bad experience with it? like screen tearing and stuttering?

depends on what settings are you gonna play with your games. if high/ultra setting and match with a normal 60hz monitor. the be ready to experience screen tearing and stuttering.

My philosophy exactly! Theoretically, could I have a 2,000w and it not affect the system negatively?

The question isn't affecting performance, it overall goes against how Power Supply's work. Each Power supply has a curve to its efficiency. Each graph will be different but here is a basic one showing how it will look.

Spoiler

By using it under/over the peak efficiency you hurting your own electric bill, even if ever so slightly. This also depends greatly on the Power Supply.

Thats not entirely true, depending on how high of an fps your getting you will not see the screen tearing as bad, I play on a 60hz monitor with 5ms response time. The only time i get screen tearing is in the 69-75 fps range on fps games, since I get well over 100 fps in those games, I don't even see tearing at all. The only way Ive been able to test this is to go into CSGO and use the console to limit the frame rate to that range.

Also stuttering would have nothing to do with your monitor unless it has a super low response time and is literally not meant for gaming.

Edit: Sorry for the double post.
