Help with choice of GPU

I have a choice to make with my new build to keep it within budget.

So far I am building a i7 6700k with 16GB DDR 4, however my choice lands on GPU, I could put in a EVGA 960 SC 4GB, or the R9 380 DD 4GB, lastly to remain on budget I can put a i5 6600k and get the 4GB EVGA 970 SSC.

Your thoughts?

PC - NZXT H510 Elite, Ryzen 5600, 16GB DDR3200 2x8GB, EVGA 3070 FTW3 Ultra, Asus VG278HQ 165hz,

Mac - 1.4ghz i5, 4GB DDR3 1600mhz, Intel HD 5000.  x2

If this is a gaming rig, I'd definitely grab the GTX 970 or R9 390 (whichever is cheaper) with the i5 6600K and overclock it.

'Fanboyism is stupid' - someone on this forum.

Be nice to each other boys and girls. And don't cheap out on a power supply.

Yeah Fallout 4, Doom 4 and Elder Scrolls VI (when it's announced) I game at 2560x1080 21:9, thanks for your input.

The i5 6600k and a R9 390 is the best choice. You really don't need an i7 for gaming. Also, the 390 has more VRAM and is way better than the 970.

The i5 is more than enough for gaming (then upgrade when you want). I would get it with the R9 390.

I'd like the R9 390 however I'm tied to a budget, and would have to drop other specs to get the 390, so the ATi offering within budget is the R9 380 4GB.

In your original post you mentioned an option of dropping a tier and going for the i5 6600k. Do that, and pair it with an R9 390.

Stick with i5 dude, no point throwing an i7 in that rig if you're only gaming. And you certainly shouldn't cheap out on gpu with that monitor.

Even with the i5 the only R9 390 with my supplier is the 8GB version which nudges me over budget, but screw it I will grab one, cheers.
