8 vs 16 gb of ram for video editing

Tasuma
Go to solution Solved by wyattzx,

You will hate life if you attempt to edit on 8GB of RAM. Adobe After Effects will consume your RAM very quickly, and you'll find yourself pulling your hair out before you know it. I would recommend 16GB minimum, and 32GB optimal, if at all applicable.

Hey all! I am getting into video editing and was wondering if 8gb is enough for 1080p video editing in after effects and premiere? The reason for asking it I am switching to M-itx and trying to decided if I should grab a 16gb kit or just keep my 2 4gb sticks.

You'll definitely like 16GB over 8GB, IMO. I went from 8 to 12 and it made me pretty damned happy.

For editing 16GB is optimal, yes it is doable with 8GB but it's very time consuming and choppy. If you can afford it go for 16GB 100%. BTW the CPU is a massive factor in editing too so I hope you got that figured out aswell

Think of RAM like the amount of space you have on a table to do your work. And you've got four people, which is like a quad core processor. If you got a small table, the amount of work that can be done would be little, even though you have 4 people trying to accomplish a task. When you double the size of the table, you can get more work done as for a certain amount of work, as you have more space for each person. So whenever you can, you should choose the option that gives you more, but not to the extent you are wasting money lel.

Yeah, editing with 8GB in the past proved very choppy and made me upgrade to 16GB the next day.

16GB will work for video editing, and it's what I use. My point was more that the more RAM you can feed, the better.
