I have a gaming laptop war going on.....

Airbornehurdle

Ok, I wanted a custom PC but my parents said that they are hard to move when you are moving to a new house so I choose to go with the gaming laptop. I needed a gaming laptop because I had to use it for school and gaming. I like the Alienware 18 and 17 but Razer 14-inch laptop took my eyes but until Asus Rebulic of Gaming Laptops. I can only buy one so which one should I choose? If you don't want these gaming laptops, you can choose other gaming laptops and I can search it on google. :)

I doubt you move house often enough for size of the pc to really be a factor and you could just build an matx or mitx pc which will perform better and be cheaper than a laptop and then you can get a separate laptop for school work that will be more portable and probably have a better battery than a gaming laptop and will be far cheaper

Gaming laptops, from what I've seen, aren't even worth the effort or cost. They may be smaller than desktops but don't pack enough punch and still weigh quite a bit despite their size. I'd hardly call the M17X R3 portable.

Avoid the huge alienware laptops, they are a rip off, too many flaming gaming features.

@Airbornehurdle

PLEASE DO NOT get the current razer blade (14 in). It runs UBER hot. Check out linus's review. Hot as fuck.

Either get :

mITX PC with a : Upcoming Cooler Master HAF Stacker , or a Bitfenix Prodigy(easy carrying around, pretty small)

MSI GS70 or Asus ROG laptop (forget the haswell models)

Razer Blade Pro, idk about how HOT it runs, but the gs70 has better cooling system and better price and performs better.  Just to let u know.

OR, ignoring your thick headed parents (NO offense)....

Get yourself a CM Storm Scout II (badass mid tower, WITH HANDLES) and build a real normal sized PC

Folding for LTT since April 2016.

Anandtech has a lot of great reviews of gaming laptops, so those can help in your decision. Obviously desktops offer a much better price/performance ratio and easier upgradeability, but laptops definitely have their place.. If you're not moving it around a lot, desktops are a better option.

The problem with comparing things like the Alienware 17 to something like the Razer Blade is that they're in completely different classes. The Blade offers more portability and a much thinner form factor, but it's extremely limited in expandability. Larger desktop-replacement class models like the Alienware 17, Sager NP8275, or MSI GT70 offer much more upgradeability like having upgradeable GPUs, several drive slots, etc, but the caveat is that they're much less portable and more expensive.. Also, in terms of performance, the Blade only offers the GTX 765M, which is much much slower than the 780M optional in the AW17, NP8275, and GT70. The 780M, for reference, shares the same GK104 core as the desktop 680/770, but of course has limited clock rates due to the power/heat restrictions in laptops..

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems

Since i'll only turned 13 about 13 days ago and I can't actually have a custom PC cause my parents stop my allowance and didn't tell me. I just wanted a gaming laptop and I really don't care about heating because I have a good cooling pad.

If they stopped your allowance how can you buy a gaming laptop since they are way more expensive

This is getting overly complicated. You only have $400, but then you have more, but then you don't, you want a gaming laptop which will cost easily over $2000 if you want a decent one, but you want it to take to school? what if it gets broken? And your parents think that moving a case with components in it weighing like 10kg max is hard to move? How often do you move? Are your parents gypsy's? Do you know how to build your own PC or do you need it built by the retailer?

My brain hurts, you're 13, buy a console or go outside and do something.

I give up, here's a watermelon shark.

OP, in order to help you, we need to know:

- Budget

- Place you want to buy the laptop from

- What games you play

Ok, I wanted a custom PC but my parents said that they are hard to move when you are moving to a new house so I choose to go with the gaming laptop. I needed a gaming laptop because I had to use it for school and gaming. I like the Alienware 18 and 17 but Razer 14-inch laptop took my eyes but until Asus Rebulic of Gaming Laptops. I can only buy one so which one should I choose? If you don't want these gaming laptops, you can choose other gaming laptops and I can search it on google. :)

If you can get the AW 17 to cost around the price of a Asus G750, I would recommend the AW over the Asus. You can get AW to be more cheaper than what it is display on the site via coupon or negotiating with the sale rep via phone. Recently there was 10-20-30 discount coupon going around (which had been expired, btw), where some were to get a supposedly $2200 AW 17 down to ~$1700 to compete with other laptops that has comparable specification. Of course, that sale is gone atm, so you would need to wait until some more coupons get release or try to negotiate with a sale rep (which may require patience, as you may need to call multiple of time as the rep you are talking can affect whether the negotiations goes well or not). However, due to the sale that they have, there should be a few AW units on backlog, so you may not be able to get a good discount on it.

Anyways, while it is true a desktop is harder to move than a laptop no matter how try to configure the desktop; however, it shouldn't be that hard that justify a purchase of a gaming laptop. It's only a tower, a monitor, keyboard / mouse, and maybe speakers. It takes 1-2 minutes to load up and the same to deload. You are going to be deloading more stuff than that if you are going to be moving that is going to be MUCH harder.

Also, seeing how you are on a computer right now, I'm assuming you already got one in your home, correct? Meaning this purchase is probably isn't necessary and you just want to buy it for your personal enjoyment and ease of use. If that's the case, why not wait until you are going to actually be moving to buy the desktop? You seem like you want to get a desktop but can't due to this move, but why buy something that give you temporary satisfaction during this move and regret later on?

Despite that many people will feel the opposite, I can see why some people would rather want a gaming laptop over a gaming desktop, but everything you had posted so far shows that a desktop would be a better investment for you.
