Silent Gaming PC Build ($1500)

Go to solution Solved by dre92,

I couldn't find any of my pictures, but here is a picture I found online.

HyperX Fury RAM is really low profile, looks great, and performs great.

Alright thank you, I think I might have a final spec list here.

CPU Cooler: Phanteks PH-TC14PE_BK 78.1 CFM CPU Cooler  ($69.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Asus Z170-PRO ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($179.99 @ Micro Center)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($150.88 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 390 8GB Nitro Video Card  ($309.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $1300.69
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

I'll stick with the R9 390 because it's only for 1080p gaming (sorry I forgot to mention but no big deal because I kinda have already made my mind about it), and that EVGA PSU is 80+ platinum for $90. I don't see many 80+ platinum 650W PSUs for under $100 tbh, so it's hard for me to pass. The case, actually I still haven't made up my mind, but at this moment I'm still leaning towards the R5 a little bit. Who knows, I might change my mind and go with the H440 later. Anyway, thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it.

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($256.89 @ OutletPC)

Motherboard: Asus Z170-DELUXE ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($317.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($150.88 @ OutletPC)

Storage: Western Digital WD Green 2TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($87.99 @ Other World Computing)

Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 390 8GB Nitro Video Card  ($309.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Total: $1448.61

Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Generated by PCPartPicker 2016-01-25 11:59 EST-0500

The goal here is to create a silent gaming PC, budget actually $2000, and color scheme is black-white because I'm planning on installing an NZXT Hue+ later. Thoughts?

I'm not really sure about the RAM, I've never used any Avexir products before, but the LED looks sick, and I'm probably going with the white LED ones.

Thanks. I've got several questions though. Isn't the aio water cooling unit supposedly louder than a decent air cooler with silent fans? I mean with air cooler I only have to worry about the fan noise, while with water cooler I have to worry about not only the fans but also the pump noise? Please cmiiw. Another thing I'd like to ask is any reason why you recommend the H440 over the R5? I heard a lot of people were not satisfied with the airflow of the H440.

i doubt you'll ever need a 320$ motherboard, don't overkill it.

The only reason I can give you is that It's purely because of aesthetics. I'd like to have a slight contrast inside the case.

I never understood why people complain about pump noise. I've never heard the pump in my H100i GTX.

However, if you really want an air cooler, I know of a really nice black and white cooler.

I chose the H440 because of your theme, and the airflow is fine, I honestly think it's literally the same as the Define R5...

I thought about getting a fanless cooler, but this is gonna be a silent build, so I'm not gonna be installing many fans, and going fanless worries me a little bit when I decide to overclock my CPU. I still need an extra storage for games, songs and stuff, and 1TB of storage capacity is not enough. Thanks for the suggestion though.

1TB is more that enough (for me and most other users, at least) and the fanless cooler should be fine, but if you're doubting, get an NH-D15 and have only one fan or none at all :P

Nice.

Dark Rock 3 fan overhangs the first memory slot. Clearance is 20mm with the fan mounted in its nominal position. Avexir Core modules with heat sink are around 39mm tall.

Not a fan of WD Green drives.

Consider a less expensive motherboard. Asus Z170-PRO is a good choice if onboard WiFi is not a requirement.

That's a pretty bulky heatsink. Is there gonna be any problem with ram clearance?

You should be able to move the fan a bit upwards. To make the clearance, but depends on how tall your ram is. Idk anything about the ram you selected, I'd say it should be fine with the HyperX Fury ram.

Yes.

You might consider something like an NH-U12S which has no memory issues. If budget permits, replace the fans with NF-F12 Industrial models and white Chromax trim pieces. Or go with an AIO lke the Kraken X61. It runs quietly and has Hue control of the pumphead logo.

Thanks for pointing that out man. I do have the Noctua NH-U12S for my HTPC, it's silent, it performs decent, no ram clearance issues (I use Corsair Vengeance DDR3 in my HTPC), but the brown fan will definitely ruin the aesthetics of this silent gaming pc build. I wonder if I should get another NH-U12S and replace the fan straight away with perhaps the be quiet silent wings fans.

What's wrong with WD Green? I genuinely want to know because I've only used WD Blue and Seagate Barracuda drives before.

No, WiFi is not a requirement, I simply pick the Deluxe because of aesthetics and I didn't know the PRO has almost similar look. Thanks, I think I'll go with this instead of the Deluxe.

That might actually work. Thanks. What ram are you using there? I guess how the ram looks doesn't really matter when they're all covered up by the heatsink and the fan.

No, see the post above yours in terms for clearance.

Because he has 2g's to spend on a computer.

Once you start spending past $1,200 on a computer, aesthetics start going into play.

WD Blue's have better performance and speed over the greens for a mere few cents more.

I use HyperX Fury RAM personally though, and I'd say they really are not much higher than that... I can give you a picture of the height, give me a second, gotta find the picture.

The R5 might work out better for you in terms of silence due to not having a AIO cooler.

Though, if you wanted to forget about aesthetics, and go for completely silent by getting rid of the window. You could get major performance.

Drop 80 bucks off your mobo, drop 20 bucks off your RAM. Get a GTX 980 TI, get a 4k monitor. Bam, 4k gaming at your 2g budget.

Overall, this build looks pretty good.

The 2TB Barracuda in the build does not have a good reputation.

My problem with WD Greens goes back a bit. I found them quite unreliable in anything but low volume i/o situations. Things may have changed recently, I just have not gotten beyond my initial problems using them.
