Yeah these came in the mail today, a drunken purchase from eBay that I totally forgot about.

post-291710-0-19728800-1453494128_thumb.

No idea what I'm gonna do with them but I suppose if I can get a few old mobos that support them I can make use. Either 771 server boards or mod them for 775 boards. If worst comes to worst I'll glue a few together and make a coaster out of them :P

Or well, very not xD

This is the exact reason I don't use my computer when I get really... REALLY drunk.

I can hold my alcohol well, but at some point we all make bad choices. And no amount of hang-over cure will alleviate the pain of purchasing half a dozen rgb mechanical keyboards so I could use one for each day of the week.

each? if not, are you sure they even work?

That was for the lot, saw it, jumped on it, forgot it :P Listing says they were pulled from working machines but I can't test them yet, need mobo.

I hate you, that's a steal if you got them all for that price :D

Maybe, I don't think so though, Xeons of that era are pretty cheap.

That sounds like an awesome idea! Different colour for each day! Then even if you get so drunk that you throw up all over one you have 6 backups! Smart like a fox you are :P

Ya, lately opterons and xeons are going for under 100 bucks working on ebay if they are pre-2012 usually no later than 2010.  I don't know why exactly.  I mean I paid less than 40 bucks for 2 working E7530s and 2 6172s.

Read the above.  Not even kidding.

I have an X3220 and it is a great old CPU but I see you have some better ones in there also :D

BurgerBum told me to leave the Xeons on a park bench and to just use the 6172 12 core Opterons.  I told him I fed the Opterons to a pug, and he got mad.  xD  Those Xeons need a special socket that only comes on pricey boards.  xD  The R810 is one of them.

@Dabombinable loves his Xeons so he might have some good input. I have not done a lot of looking into all of those ones you have but I know the X3220 is 775 and most of those others look like 771s and possibly even 1366 :D

This guide might help if you want to do the socket mod assuming you have not done it before :) http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/365998-mod-lga771-to-lga775-cpu-modification-tutorial/

I haven't done the mod before myself but am fairly confident I can do it, just one of the stickers to blank of a couple of rows of pins, plus a bit of surgery to the socket. I think the main issue will be getting boards that support them. If I find one that works I'll hit up my local PC store again to see if he has any old ones laying around in his cave (yes he has an actual sandstone cave full of old PC parts)

Do both and make sure to tag me if you do a build log or something with it any of these and/or the motherboards :)

Will do mate :) I'm in the process of making my own test bench  so I'll let you know about that as well when It's done/in progress. I think the two projects will be a perfect match :)

CEX is best place to buy shit m8... C2D E6600 or whatever for £2. Also, I might be building a PC with dual E5462's... in mATX :P

Yeah shit is the word with some things from CEX, went in yesterday looking for a Xbone controller, they had a used  'lunar white' one for £58.99, an entire pound off the retail price of a brand new one! Bargain!

That being said I got a 2GB stick of DDR2 for 10p once from there. I always pop  in to see what they have in their limited PC hardware section. They've had a HD7770 in for ages for £30, not a great deal, but wonder if they'd take an offer on it seen as it's been there for ages?

Looking forward to pics of the build :)

Nice deals! Might go out of my hometown to a few other CEX's looking for bargains next week as I'm off work. My local one seems to have loads of laptop memory though for some reason??

Get that build done I wanna see it! :P
