The program encourages academic institutions around the world to establish dedicated VR labs on their campuses. Crytek is providing full source code access to CRYENGINE development software for free, while hardware partners will equip the labs with VR headsets and machines. VR First locations will become key centers for nurturing new talent in VR development and creating a global community equipped to embrace this exciting field of technology.

Im pretty sure the VR hype is dead.

Im pretty sure the VR hype is dead.

yup we're all hyped on holo-decks and deactivating the security protocols so good old al capone could beat us for a more immersive experience /s

 

lets remember cryteks motto

Not really, while the higher that anyone wanted starting price of the Rift and possibly Vive, that didn't really killed the hype i think it just slowed down a bit, but the hype is still there the closer we get to the release date of the Vive and then the Rift the hype will climb up and be higher that ever.

Ehm. Do read the article/page or at least watch the video.
It's not about a VR game engine, it an initiative to push VR ahead, in all industries, not just gaming.

Also, this would probably not just be locked into VR headsets, since they never specified VR headset as the platform, but VR in general.

Anyway, I think it's pretty cool awesome stuff.

If VR is already hard to run, and crysis 3 is already somewhat difficult to run. What kind of GPU setup do we need!

I can't put out $600 for the Oculus, I just did that for my 980ti, my next purchase will be a 1Tb SSD, but I really like the Oculus controls. If VR Desktop is a thing by the time I'm deciding on a 4k or UltraWide monitor, I may buy Oculus. I still want a 4k tv for multiple viewers. I'd but the Oculus controlers separate if they work without the headset.

I run my browser through NSA ports to make their illegal jobs easier. :P
If it's not broken, take it apart and fix it.

Hopefully this encourages a lot more developers to even bother and tackle VR. Cause even if I could afford VR headsets, they are going to be sitting on my shelf for the most part. Until more games and programs come out for them.  :/

Needing 90fps @ Higher than 1920x1080p @ High-Ultra Details (As we'd expect, why limit urself)

 

Highend need only apply... unless it's a lighter not so power hungry title, but you still need to power 90fps through higher than 1080p.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

We will have to see how VR on HBM especially HBM2.0 units. Maybe it won't be as demanding to achieve those high FPS but I agree on those 2yo old pc which is while still good, it's not gonna cut it for VR.
