WD Red 4TB GIVEAWAY!

LinusTech

I have only a Seagate Barracuda 500GB for everything, and constantly backup everything important to DVD´s, CD´s, Google Drive. It would be nice to have 2 WD Reds so I can RAID 1 them and not worry about always backing everything up.

Last week my wife gave me her old gaming PC with an 128GB SSD running the OS and a 1TB HDD for storage, although she left most of her files on the 1TB leaving me with just under 100GB for my use. For external storage I have a slew of external HDDs and I've been meaning to setup a "best practice" form of external storage. I have a Western Digital 1TB external NAS drive, 1TB Western Digital MyBook, a 500GB Western Digital Passport and a 320GB Western Digital Passport that I keep a backup of all my photos. All my drives just happen to be Western Digital and that's mainly due to availability and price where I was when each drive was purchased.

Best of luck to everyone!

I use two WD 250GB drives internally; one for a boot drive and the other for a storage drive because, when I purchased them way back in 2007, I really didn't need that much storage, but now I also have an external 500GB WD My Passport drive for backups in case the internal ones fail.

500GB old samsung 3.5" internal hard drive and a 2.5" external samsung HDD well the first one was chosen not by me because i wasn't into tech many years ago when my pc was build but i guess it was "high end" and not ridiculously expensive back in the day which is what i asked my pc to be back in the day and the external was cheap and i needed something equal size for backup and some more storage also i did not require a separate power supply so it was like a huge pen drive  oh and it was cheap as hell because the cardboard box was a bit dented oh and no SSD because my MB has no sata 3

1.) I run a Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB as my boot drive because It's REALLY fast and has enough storage for my basic programs and files. at the time of buying it had the best $$$/GB ratio so i got i really good deal on it.

Otherwise i have a 250GB external drive that's getting pretty full that's full of family pictures, movies, and a lot of music flacs/wavs. I would've gotten a bigger drive but this carried over from an older computer because i was short on cash.

I would love to win this! i have 4 extra sata ports on my mobo right now and a raid 5 would be perfect.

Desktop used to be running this config:

OCZ Vertex 4 128GB (Boot, cause SSDs are awesome and the OCZ Vertex 4 was fast and had a good warranty and this was a needed upgrade from a 60GB Corsair Force GT that just wasn't enough)

Seagate Barracuda 2TB

Seagate Barracuda 3TB

The Seagates seemed like great value, offering 7200RPM performance for the cost of a 5400 RPM drive.

Then, I transferred the 2TB to my server, to centralize my media storage a bit more.

In the past month, my 3TB in my desktop has failed, and the 2TB in the server is beginning to show the first signs of failure.

So for a few weeks I ran Dropbox and other programs of an external drive while waiting to RMA the drives. Appears that the Seagate 2TB has a 1 year warranty that is over and so I decided to buy a WD Black 1TB for my desktop and move my 3TB to the server when it's returned from RMA.

So, I now have a server running a few different Seagate Drives and a WD Red 3TB. Again, Seagates were great value at the time, but now I'm constantly getting errors in writing to my array(running tRAID from FlexRAID), and I'm so scared that my Seagate Drive will just suddenly die and I have to rush to buy a new drive. I've only bought one 3TB Red so far but the features it offers are so amazing I think I'll have to go with them from now on for reliability.

I run a Seagate 500GB HDD in my current rig. I use this mainly because it was the best amount of storage for my needs at the time I bought my PC. But now I'm out of space from all the damn mods I have on my games!

Currently I'm running two 120GB SSDs in RAID0 for the OS and some games and two 1TB HDDs for games, media, and other stuff. It's not my ideal setup but that's what happens when you add stuff down the road instead of buying more storage from the start.

2 x 120GB SSD in raid 0, I did this as i found that 120GB was too small for all my programs etc and I had bought a new one for my laptop think that it was deep but it was a dead sata cable, so the spare one went into my desktop.

2x 1TB hdd as individual drives in the desktop for storages of some steam games, docs, music etc

1x 2TB external usb 3 for desktop backup

2X1TB external usb hdd for movies/ series install files and any other file that i need to share with someone else. This also allows me to watch movies etc on the TV

1X128 GB SSD in macbook pro, for programs

1x 500GB hdd in which i replaced the CD drive with for mobile storage of documents, music etc.

Most of the selection of drives were dictated by price and the need for extra storage.

1. I am running two seagate 1tb drives in raid 1 for security on my data, i got them because i didn't think i would hit 1tb it pretty much only games but in addition to all the other software and stuff i am at about 900gb.

On the mineral oil pc i am building(only need to add mineral oil still waiting to order i, the $120 for it is gonna take me about another week to order but i will make a thread about it once i finish it) is running a 32gb SSD that only holds my os and a couple drivers, that got capped very quickly as you could have guessed, and i am going to add a 500gb to 1tb drive to sit outside the tank for the rest of my storage.

I am currently using an Intel 520 series 120 GB as boot because I found it on sale for $100. I'm also using two Vertex 4's (128 GB) in RAID0 because they were only $50 on Black Friday. I only use the intel for boot and I use the OCZ's for my steam games. I currently store all music and movies on my families desktop that has a 60 GB boot SSD and a WD blue 1TB drive for mass storage.

I built my own PC and am running a 1 TB HDD. I chose a HDD over a SSD because of the higher memory capacity, and the more reasonable price.  I have over 150 games on Steam and am nearly out of storage on my HDD.  I want to start making gaming videos on youtube and the extra storage would be great for holding raw video recordings.

1. I run 3 drives. A Samsung 840 250GB to store my OS and my favourite games. I have a WD 500GB Black drive to store my music and other games, and a WD 3TB Green drive to store my archive of movies and tv shows. The reason it's set up this way is because I just collected them over time. I started with the green thinking it would be all i'd ever need, then ran out of space. I then got the black just for OS and games, and am still running out of space, but invested in an SSD simply for the speed. I'm currently saving to build myself a NAS box to get all my storage out of my main gaming rig.

My "storage" solution is ~1 TB of raided SSD's.  It is Intel 330 (240 GB) * 4 = 960 GB in Raid-0.

I built this solution because: reasons!

1. I have a gaming build on which i use 2x 1TB Drives. One of WD and other of Segate. Most of the space on my drives is used up for Steam game Installs and I also like collecting Full HD Music Videos.

I bought segate one in an offer with a coupon. Second one I bought WD because I wanted to keep both brands of HDisks. As i dont really trust either with my data. Have experienced dying drives from both the brands of Hard Disks, also samsung.

My storage configuration was based pretty much around budget.  I have an OCZ Vertex 3 120GB for my boot drive that I got on Black Friday for $50.  For my main storage I use a WD 640GB HHD (Not sure of which model).  This configuration gives me the best balance of speed for the price.

1. I'm running a

OCZ vertex 2 E 120gb as boot drive + bf3  because it was dirt cheap (60 €) and the speed of course,

2x  Samsung spinpoint f3 1tb with music, movies etc, (cheap + performance is pretty good)

1 WD velociraptor 80gb which i use for some games (d3,wow,batman arkham city) + replay file from f1 2012 mklinked to here instead of my ssd, (i had this one before i had an ssd,so i got it because i wanted the low access time and high speeds, still using it because well, it's still pretty damm good)

WD Black 2tb which i use for my documents folder, images, wallpapers, office, temp folder, backups, and the rest of my games that i own + mods and custom maps (14gb of UT3 maps xD) (5 year warranty ftw ,really nice performance, and i haven't had a wd black die on me yet so i trust it the most :P)

1. I currently have 3 500gb segate drives in raid0 with a 120gb samsung boot drive. All of the raid 0 drives were purchased over a wide margin of time as I could afford to add storage. It is truly an horrific storage solution, and I dread the day that one of them dies.

Right now I am using a 250GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. In terms of storage I really need to upgrade my HDD space...but have been on the fence about if I want to build a home server or just setup a nas. I most likely will go with just a new larger drive for my desktop and a nas for backup/media. I don't have enough data to justify a dedicated server for storage....but I want one. =/

I run a Kingston V300R for my boot drive because of the great price. I have a 1 TB WD Caviar Black for my games and 2 1TB WD Blue drives in Raid 1 for backup storage of my important files. I also have a 500GB WD external drive for storage and mobility.

1. I currently run 2x Intel 520 120GB drives in raid 0 for boot and apps and a Samsung 840 Pro 256GB for games. Why? because I hated waiting for apps and programs to load. I always felt that storage was the bottleneck of my system and in my new system now, I wanted the best I could get at the time. For storage I use Seagate Barracudda 2x 7200.11 500GB and a 7200.12 320GB because I just pulled them as storage from my old PC. I bought an extra WD green drive to use as storage for movies, music and TV shows because I was running out of storage and run my PC 24/7 so the power saving of the green drives was great for idling. I also got an extra Seagate ST3000DM001 for backup and I use my PC as the central hub for streaming movies and shows to all the computers in the rest of the house. I got my drives because they were cheap, had good reviews and benchmarks showed good price/performance value.
