I don't think it's feasible for AMD to re-brand anything. We're talking a die shrink. We're talking a brand new and presumably much improved architecture. We're talking lots of brand new blocks such as the display block.

If AMD wanted to re-brand, I think they'd have to Frankenstein it so badly that it would be more expensive and complicated to fit their old stuff into the lineup.

The only thing that I would expect AMD to try salvage (if at all) is Fiji and they'd still have to spend a lot of money adapting that design to support all the new technologies. Unless of course they just relaunch it as is and keep it at 28nm.

I doubt it's worth the effort.

I think AMD will launch these two, Polaris 10 and 11, as four SKUs minimum and then other Polaris based GPUs will pop up later. I think they'll be more modular than previous AMD designs so that they can scale up and down to fit into multiple TDPs and different memory configurations so that a Polaris 10, for example, can be put into both notebooks and low end desktop.

I seriously doubt amd will rebrand anything this time. 14nm will put everything to shame, so makes no sense to reuse older architecture.

Sounds like amd will finally have an alternative to nvidia on the laptop market. Sounds really good.

 

I really hope so, with the better node shrink and earlier release date AMD could really be the way to go this year on gpus. And AMD getting into the laptop market would be huge. That Polaris 10 demo at CES where it was using half the power of a 950 on Battlefront was impressive as hell.

Finally I can't wait to get a GPU that actually has a significant performance jump. I could really use it for Fallout 4, running it at 2560x1440 at 144Hz with mods would be really nice. At the moment it running at about 45. If I could run it at at least 100fps I will buy the GPU. Or I will wait and see what Nvidia brings out.

I'm hoping the jump is big as well. I would happily replace my two 980Ti's  with a single GPU that's even 10-15% slower than these two.

Here's hoping for big Polaris really shining.

Not really swayed by the power consumption demo. Its easy as hell to rig them or at least present them under an unrealistic scenario. I'd like to know how fast the smaller Polaris is rather than how much power it consumes. Plus, the 950 is on 28nm whereas Polaris is on 14LPP... the greater power consumption should be an expectation.

 

With that nit pick out of the way, I hope AMD really delivers on the bigger Polaris because Fiji wasn't that impressive. The smaller Polaris might be something like a 750 Ti (cheap, no external power, okayish at gaming) which will move a lot of units if it comes out before an NVIDIA equivalent but probably won't earn AMD a lot of money due to the nature of margins with low end parts.

Nah, I want new technology to come out as soon as reasonably possible. If NVIDIA beats AMD out to the first punch again, then shame on AMD. We know they can do it with the 7970.

If Arctic Islands doesn't release before Pascal then they don't get the jump.

Access to newer technologies is more important than brand loyalty.

Why does everyone assume rebrands? All we've seen are new SKUs and people are screaming "rebrand" like no tomorrow. If anything, Nvidia are more likely to do that with GDDR5X since their GP104 SKU was leaked to be using GDDR5X

not jet as stated in the post AMD is still looking if they can improve the chip (AMD don't screw this up)

I'm guessing Computex for the flagship launch with the rest of the product stack releasing in Q3 (June-October). Getting a lot of coverage at Computex would also potentially reduce the intensity of the limelight on Intel's Broadwell-E release.

I could easily see them doing the gpu line up as

  • 490x - polaris 11
  • 490 - polaris 11 w/ disabled parts
  • 485 - Fury?
  • 480x - 390x
  • 480 - 390
  • 470x - 380x
  • 470 - 380

polaris 10 can be their budget part or laptop part.

 

Its possible but NO this cannot go on, its a new series which means all their lineup needs to be made from new 14nm polaris cores no rebrands and other idiotic stuff.

I dont think this is the case, it doesnt make sense to announce new core less power at 1080p vs competition and then throw rebrands in in non top end gpu, which will consume more than they advertise its not right.

 

This time around there shall be a whole new series mid-high end of 14nm polaris gpu's similar for nvidia.Low end is irrelevant nowdays.

I want to upgrade from my GTX 670 to an amd card and i will not accept a mid-high end card thats rebranded, fuck em ill go nvidia again if they do this.

AMD doesn't have a lot of money and designing a whole new GPU even though it may seem like a mere bump up to GCN 2.0 isn't cheap. I think I read somewhere that it can cost up to $80 million to design a new chip on the new dies because die shrinks are actually becoming an expense and not a cost cutting measure. Rebranding could be a very real thing, but I doubt that its going to have anything older than GCN 1.2.

yes it is an expected from 14nm. So there's no reason to believe it was rigged. This is not meant as competition to Maxwell. It will likely destroy Maxwell. It has to compete with Pascal, but AMD cannot put a Pascal GPU up there.

AMD themselves said that the power consumption improvements are 70% from the switch to 14nm and 30% from the new GCN 4 architecture.

As usual the competition between Nvidia and AMD will give us decent prices. Nvidia will release Pascal to fight Polaris.

Prices are normally high in the interim period when one company launches the new gen and the other is still stuck on old gen. Doesn't look like that will happen this year.

 

 

490x - new gpu (I think 200 watt card)

480x- fiji rebrand hbm 2 and 14nm (I think 150 watt card)

470x- 380x rebrand 14nm 384 bit memory (I think 125 watt card)

460x- new gpu ( I think 100 watts or less)

you cannot call it a re-brand at all if they switch to 14nm finfet. It's so much different...

It depends on what Nvidia is doing also. In the last couple of years Nvidia was unable to pull out anything revolutionary and AMD was ok to rebrand and say here we have the same performance...

But with Nvidia pascal coming this year (and AMD knew this for a long time) I have a feeling that AMD will go with an all new top-bottom 14nm / 16nm finfet linuep.

It depends on what Nvidia is doing also. In the last couple of years Nvidia was unable to pull out anything revolutionary and AMD was ok to rebrand and say here we have the same performance...

But with Nvidia pascal coming this year (and AMD knew this for a long time) I have a feeling that AMD will go with an all new top-bottom 14nm / 16nm finfet linuep.

It would certainly make fiscal sense to rebrand most of the line-up of a generation if you were planning on spending a lot of money on a general overhaul.
