As the PS4 and XBOX One are basically custom built PCs and it's been rumored they will be the last consoles from Sony and Microsoft that makes me wonder if Nintendo are quietly thinking they will have a monopoly in the near-future in the console space, sony have more-or-less already almost dropped the vita so the 3DS is becoming a monopoly

that statement is completly wrong, source: https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/sales/hard_soft/

That actually is surprising, but monopolizing the console market doesn't mean much, if they raise the price, then people will just go PC

ease of use which now its getting to the point of being easier on the pc than on the console. every time i turn my ps3/4 on theres some new update that takes decades to download and install. they are just lower end gaming pcs now.

the old consoles used to have that benefit but thats pretty much gone now. and its almost cheaper to get a better gaming pc than a console or if you count the console hardware being out of date and them releasing a new one every 2 years(just an opinion since they honestly cant expect that hardware to last like the last gen systems that were ahead of their time hardware wise) then whats the point in buying a 3 to 500 dollar system over and over again.

Ive spent more money on consoles then i have on my last gaming rig which was better than even this gen gaming systems

Gaming pc= higher startup price lower future price (if you buy decent hardware and not stupid expensive top of the line stuff and not way outdated crap)

Console= lower startup but higher long run (Ps +, Xbone live new systems every few years)

one thing consoles have over pcs is the physical media, with console once your finished with a game you can trade it whereas with pcs the games are locked to your account

even thats sorta going away. if you think about it look how close the current gen consoles almost got rid of them and added drm.

I'm sorry but, what rumours? I'd agree it's possible that one or the other will drop out of the game for other reasons. It's also possible that someone else might come into that space and shrink their market. But both of them dropping out and giving Nintendo a monopoly? I can't see that happening. Sony has sold ~35mill PS4s in the last couple of years, Microsoft is only ~20mill. I can't see them just leaving the market. What's going to change in the next 5-10 years that hasn't already happened?

what? the same recycled halo and forza, and killzone, grand turismo, latest mario spinoff and such.

Not saying those are bad since i loved all of them minus halo but once you played 1 or 2 forza's or the 2 gt series then yea it gets kinda old

I can say with certainty that this will not be the last console generation. It began as an underpowered generation, especially compared to the last one. If anything, new ones will be arriving sooner rather than later.

Nintendo has basically removed themselves from the mainstream console market anyway. Their release schedule is now out of sync with their "competition" and they clearly have entirely different visions for their products.

Well, Nintendo NX is rumored to be not a traditional console too, so they may stop with regular consoles as we know them now too

Well, Nintendo NX is rumored to be not a traditional console too, so they may stop with regular consoles as we know them now too

The NX at this point is a "we don't know what the hell it is". So the media post "rumours" about it being everything all at once. I personally think the conventional wisdom from the start was that it was a home console, because the Wii U wasn't doing to great. Then some of the rumours came out suggesting a portable system and... "oh, it must be both!"

I think eventually, maybe not within the next 10 years, Nintendo will release a system that's really awesome and unique, but we'll see.  Sony and Microsoft enjoy money so they have no reason to drop out of the race.  13.1 billion was spent on gaming in the US alone last year, more than movie and music, and Sony and Microsoft got a huge percentage of that money.

The rumor that this will be the last consoles have usually been based on the fact of Game streaming servies like Onlive, Gaki or however it was spelled that PS bought. which wouldn't make Nintendo a monopoly that mattered it would make them More of the guy who got left behind in a market people dont want. Its not like all these internet providers who have a product everyone wants and needs to an extent and you can only buy from them only. But that was more said thinking these consoles would last as long of a generation as the last 360/PS3 which now is rumored to be a quicker turn around. and i dont think in just a couple years internet will be good enough Ping and bandwidth for this yet at least for the masses and not forgetting smaller less developed country's  they could do both though who knows shits all a guessing game ....

My Opinion:  years ago was onlive was going to be the future eventually but Honestly the Compressed stream and added lag after experiencing it and 4k becoming a thing now makes me think its got a long ways to go. 1080p not terribly compressed is still going to require a large bandwith and 4k gaming will be a much bigger thing in the next 5 years and netflix and Amazon prime 4k stream which is very compressed as well is 25Mbps already so you would need a much higher then that bandwidth and what happens if 2 or 3 people are playing in your house. just not feeseble yet. 300Mbps 2ms ping for Everyone! lol

Do you actually turn your PS4 off or put it to sleep? When in sleep mode it has an auto update feature. Pretty sure PS3 has it as well if you have PS+. I haven't had to actually download an update for months.

I always put mine to sleep and it never auto updates games until I turn it on.
