New mobo for fx 8350

I had my PC for two years running the FX8350 on a MSI 970A-G43 mobo. Now I decided that I would overclock the CPU, and am thinking about changing the mobo, sice I don't want to end up frying something. I am thinking of getting the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 or Asrock Fatal1ty 990FX Killer. Which one should I get.

I would than also reuse the MSI board for my dads PC, so which CPU should I get for him (does not need the pc for anything else than browsing the web, word, and viewing photos)

You are better off selling the 8350 and going Intel if you want more performance.

Spending $150 so you can get 5 fps more in games and a tiny improvement in other programs sounds pretty stupid to me. Just go intel.

IMO I would just give (or sell, whatever you will do) the CPU and motherboard to your dad and go Intel. He will get great performance and you can get a performance increase too.

I could suggest what motherboard and CPU if you are willing to consider this and give a certain budget

Just look what you can get out of it on that board, wear it out until it drops below your subjective "playable" level and replace it with whatever is best on the market.

 

If you already want more performance, getting a hawell/skylake i5 is the way to go. 

 

Investing in this old platform for an overclock is investing with severe diminishing returns.

I was also thinking about switching to intel, but beacuse I am a student I don't have a lot of money to spend. Approximately how much would a intel cpu and a mobo cost me to get a similar performance. The store would be www.computeruniverse.net

I would look into the i5 4460 or 4440 and a H97 motherboard.

Not sure where you are from, but that should be 250 euros or 210 US dollars or so.

Yes, it's more than only a motherboard, but you will get better gaming performance at least, dont have to overclock and you dont have to buy an FX 4300 or FX 6300 for your dad.

i dont think your gonna get a lot out of that. if your just playing games and dont edit i would sell everything and go for an i5

Besides playing games I also do photo editing and some video editing. What would be better for me to get a K or non-K cpu.

As others have said, it's not worth it.  I would either hold out for Zen if you want to stick with the red team, or if you want an upgrade now move to an Intel platform.

I am not planing to wait for Zen to come out.

That does not mean it's the best help you can provide. If someone asks for help with cutting his hands off, will you also suggest the hacksaw or do you tell him to consider not doing it?

It's a question based on limited information (out of ignorance). He didn't know any better, thus you have to advise him of the (better) alternatives.

 

It's like someone asking for a portable DAC, because he wants to use a certain headphone on his phone. You can advise him a DAC, or you can tell him to buy a pair of headphones that won't require any. Both are advice, and the latter might be preferable (and less expensive).

I asked for a new board, since I was not thinking about switching yet, but it seems, that that there isn't a very big price increase for me in switching to intel, so I am wiling to switch, if I find something for the right price. And I could give my dad my 8350 and mobo, and it would sill make sense due to the end price being a bit bigger (that I can still pay) for better pc-s for both of us.

That looks like it was designed for 95w CPUs...
