The company said email and password details were likely gathered either through malware downloaded during phishing attacks or indirectly through data breaches of other companies that stored Time Warner Cable's customer information, including email addresses.
 
The company said it has not yet determined how the information was obtained, but there were no indications that Time Warner Cable's systems were breached.
 
Time Warner Cable spokesman said it was recently notified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation that some customers' email addresses including account passwords "may have been compromised."

 

 

 

 

 

 

Time Warner has indeed been, as they say, rekt. Not specifically Time Warner Cable, but their partners who also hold necessary data to help Time Warner function. This is particularly unsettling for me as Charter Communications, the ISP I use bought Time Warner. Hopefully they can get it together with their partners and not let this shit happen again.

 

Charter, while they're a good provider and all, needs to kick their new company in the arse and figure out a solution to this to not happen again.

 

I mean, they only provide internet to millions of people. What could go wrong?

If it was done by phishing and malware downloads, it's the fault of the company for not having good enough policies on employee access.

 

Plus this wasn't Time Warner themselves literally, it was a breech of their data from an outside company who keeps it for them, but still Time Warner.

Some might be from phishing, others might be from weak passwords. Then some might be from a weak security itself. Those all attribute to the overall security of a system. And, I think there needs to be a change (I can't forsee it, I'm not an innovator, yet) to the way we handle everything security, from the ground up.

Time Warner customer here. None of what the OP said happened. 350k~ customers' emails were leaked or data warehouse partners were breached, leaking info on the TWC.com accounts' emails. They used this to find more phishing emails to send out. Time Warner/Time Warner CABLE wasn't hacked.

A *very* small number of people were affected, and likely would be from other phishing scams regardless. Your info is safe unless you opened a sketchy email. Normal browsing wouldn't be affected..

This kind of attack confirms one or both of two hunches that I've had about Time Warner.

That they employ idiots who:

1) Unironically use 123456 as their password

 

2) Think that clicking on an email sent to their company address saying "buy SatisfactionViagra Today" is a good idea.

I doubt that admins are that dumb... Are they? At my workplace we have minimum 8 characters, number, capital, symbol and password can be 6 moths old maximum.
