Xeon Build

Trey222

I have tried both 1gb and 2gb sticks of ram still no post. I think Iay have to update the bios to run a Xeon. Unfortunately to do that I would need an i7 920 or similar.

try the ram sticks in a few different slots. x58 can be funny about which order you use the slots in sometimes.

Already tried that. I have also tried it outside the case moved the GPU around tried different cables and checked the Motherboard pins as well as reseating the CPU.

I am going to get an updated BIOS chip and see if that works because somewhere on the Overclock forums I saw that worked for someone. The bios chip is also cheaper than the i7 920.

I also reset the CMOS. So unless a part is dead I think it may be the BIOS.

Yup, I've had some rather weird experiences on my SR-2 with that (okay, not X58, but still LGA1366).

EDIT: nevermind. Forgot to update the thread before posting response. :D

Hmm. The P6T is a very old board so unless you find one brand new the chances are it's been running overclocked and X58 is a very old platform now so I would worry about capacitor aging and so on.

I know these Xeons seem like an awesome idea but with the prices/age of the motherboards you need to run them I don't think I would bother.

Still, I wish you well and I hope you get it running !

I am doing a Xeon build myself, if I had to guess I am thinking you are likely running into a motherboard compatibility problem with the motherboard. Here is a list of the supported CPU's for your motherboard, note that none of them are Xeon processors. In order for ECC to work on Xeons it requires some extra stuff on the motherboard, even if you are not going to use ECC ram, the motherboard still needs to be ECC compatible (usually).

I already knew that the motherboard does not support the CPU but I have been able to find multiple accounts of people using this board with the X56XX Xeons.

I am now 60% I have found the problem. After talking to some people over on Overclock and Hard forum I have come up with the theory that the BIOS is out of date. I just got a new and updated chip from Ebay for 10 US.I really hope that fixes it.

Maybe you do need to find a compatible CPU from the chart so you can at least boot and update the BIOS from there. A board this age is unlikely to have a headless flash-drive BIOS flash option, which would be more convenient.

I was going to do that but getting a new and updated bios chip was cheaper.

The Xeon will work in this board. Absolutely 100%. You may, however, run into issues when using all 6 DIMM slots as the memory voltage controller on the Xeon can be a bit flaky when all slots are populated and this board is one of the worst for that issue.

But it should definitely work on this board providing the board works.

About the only boards that don't run these Xeons are Foxconn's Bloodrage GTI and Flamingblade but that's only because Foxconn threw in the towel and didn't even add support for Gulftown (the non Xeon equivalent of Westmere). And of course any DFI Lanparty X58 because they went bust before Gulftown came out.

Hello all I have some bad news. The new bios chip came and I still got no post. I have decided to just return the parts and go with an X99 or or LGA1151. Thank you all for coming along for this crazy ride and sorry for the anticlimactic end.

Also yes. I also moved the RAM around moved the GPU around tried differed PSU cables and rebuilt the system outside the case.

Yeah if it doesn't have a latter bios with 6 core support it won't work, I helped upgrade a mate with the same board from his 920 to a x5670.

Should be able to pick up a 920 cheap of ebay to update the bios though, then sell it again after.

I have returned most of the parts now. I have formulated a new plan. I am going to pick up a Xeon E5 2670. I still have to do some more research before I buy it though. Also anyone know how well it overclocks? I know the multiplier is locked but the BLCK is like X58.

X79 isn't like X58, man. Intel made sure that you can not BCLK with any CPU other than the ones that they sold as unlocked. So 3960x, 3970x, 3930k, 3820k 4930k 4960x. Every other chip is locked to high heaven and can't be overclocked at all.

I still have an X79 rig with a 8 core Xeon in and I can vouch that you will not be able to overclock it at all. Even if I change the BCLK to 103 the rig just freezes and I have to clear cmos.
