Xeon Build

Trey222

X79 isn't like X58, man. Intel made sure that you can not BCLK with any CPU other than the ones that they sold as unlocked. So 3960x, 3970x, 3930k, 3820k 4930k 4960x. Every other chip is locked to high heaven and can't be overclocked at all.

I still have an X79 rig with a 8 core Xeon in and I can vouch that you will not be able to overclock it at all. Even if I change the BCLK to 103 the rig just freezes and I have to clear cmos.

Does your RAM have an XMP profile set? If so, disable that and set the frequency whilst BCLKing to something beneath it's rated speed.

It does but I didn't use it. I set the ram manually to 1600mhz, giving it plenty of headroom (it's 2133 ram).

You can't overclock the FSB on X79 (or strap) because Intel have simply locked it out completely. Well, unless you have a K or X series CPU.

I have heard this I have found I may be able to raise the baseclock slightly but not by much. What I am curios about is will the 8 core E5 2670 clocked at stock beat the 6 core X5650 clocket at 4.3GHz. Then again X79 platform has some nice befits like SATA  6Gbs, PCI-E 3.0, and USB 3.0.

Don't get me wrong dude I love my 8 core Ivy. It turbos to 2.1ghz on all cores (slightly lower than the 2670) but uses 65 watts at peak load and when threading correctly out paces a 4670k by over double. That wasn't in Windows, though, that was in OSX. However, that means I have put it on a Corsair H55 on a 700 RPM Noiseblocker and it's completely and utterly silent, with no audible noise from the fan at all. And it never goes over 38c not even during Prime haha.

I currently have it in my lady's PC with a Gigabyte X79 UD3 and a Titan Black. It games beautifully, even at the lower res of 1080p (CPU seems fine).

But yeah, if I even so much as touch the FSB it throws a tantrum and I have to clear CMOS so just know you won't be overclocking it in any way, shape or form.

What it all comes down to though is price. How much is it? and are X79 boards on the rise over there like they are in the UK? because board prices here have exploded.

The CPU will cost only 70 US, but the board will cost around 200 US. Slightly more expensive but I think that is what I am going to go with because the board I am looking at actually supports the CPU unlike with my X58 board. The newer standards are nice too. I have a 360mm Rad for my CPU so I will barely have to run the fans at all.

To any one who see this I have decided to go with X79 and stared a new thread. You can find that thread here. https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/540583-xeon-build-20-code-name-xenox/#comment-7159358

Oh as a side note it ended up not being the motherboard that failed but the CPU.

  • 2 years later...

Hi, got recently for 75 dollars ( used parts )

p6t deluxe v2 ( failling, repaired it )

x5650 + stock cooler i7 (damaged heatsink, repaired it )

22gb ram ( they seems be working fine

500w psu ( damaged, repaired it )

i was wondering if you tested your build

let me tell you that p6t asus boards wont boot with only 1 stick, you will need at last 2 sticks

if 1 sticks, wont boot

if 2 sticks A1 B1 sticks

if 3 sticks A1 B1 C1

if 4 sticks A2 A1 B1 C1

TOP performance 6 sticks

5 sticks will boot too, even if manual wont say it

Good luck

If this not works, tell me exactly what is happening when you press the power buttom

If when you press the power buttom, it ups, but shutdown in some seconds just change the CMOS, think these old boards have 10 years old, and CMOS works fine for only 3 years most cases.
