Will the A10-7870k be "decent" for gaming if it was overclocked

Hi,

So I'm planning to build a kind of a budget-oriented PC using the AMD A10 7870. I would probably overclock the CPU to 4.7 GHz and the integrated GPU to 1.1-ish GHz of course with a pretty good cooler ( the hyper 212 evo ). So my question is will this build be capable of 1080p gaming (i don't mind playing on low settings) and will my CPU bottleneck a GTX 960 which i want to add later on.

Yes, It will run 1080p fine. I would have gone with an i3, i don't think an A10 will bottleneck a 960 though.

APU's see a nice boost from overclocking, just make sure you get RAM with a high frequency if you're using the iGPU.

 

Edit: You probably want something like an AIO if you're going to 4.7, it'll get very hot with only an air cooler.

4.7ghz is very aggressive, you can't be sure you'll reach it - set your expectations accordingly.

 

That said it will run games at 1080p just fine if you're willing to play at low-medium settings

The A10 is fine. I'd sugges getting a R9 380 for more performance than a 960

Yeah get the A10 + like 2133Mhz RAM. Also as suggested get a R9 380 instead

Unless you are in place where 212 evo is by far cheapest option, there are options from raijitek, thermalight, thermaltake cryorig, even enermax that are better than it. well enermax is mostly on par but quieter. and thermalight 140 POWER for around 50$ destroys everything. ereboss is good 35$ or so option, about same with thermalight macho. raijitek aidos is quieter than evo sometimes even cheaper. cryorig has some beastly coolers you cant go wrong with at any price point and they look incredibly badass. bequiet has coolers that look sharp aswell and are basicly silent.

No bottle(most games) it should handle the 960 but without GPU it will probably be stuck on 720p until then...

Faster ram is key to better performance on apus.

Also get an r9 380 instead (and flash it to 380x if you are crazy enough).

A10 7870k owner here.

 

get 2400MHz DUAL CHANNEL (that is 2x4GB or more RAM)

get a A88X motherboard

overclock the iGPU to like 1000-1100MHz

Leave CPU at stock

raise the BCLCK as much as possible (i'm able to do 103)

?????

you should not hit 30FPS with medium settings @ 1080p in most titles

Actually an nh-d15 outperforms most AIOs - and either way spending 70+$ on a cooler for an apu doesn't make a lot of sense. He'd want to go for a hyper 212 evo as a max
