Our school gives every student Chromebooks, and since I recently started folding on my old pc, I thought I'd try folding on the Chromebook, since the 2nd I've done 20 WU (19) on the Chromebook, since the Chromebook does one WU in an hour and a half vs. the day one my old hardware. But I was sitting in class waiting for the work unit to finish when it said it was DISCONNECTED! That's when I realized... The school blocks the folding downloads :( Sad story I know.

Everyone would be having to borrow chargers from people, but It's a Lenovo N21 Chromebook, with an advertised 8 Hours of battery life on the sticker and 10 on their website, but when folding I get about 5-7hours

I think the download specifically uses a port which your school blocks in general.

Like for example idk how it works but gaming ports are ALL blocked.

Hearthstone for mobile is a good example, they block it, idk how.

They're right to do so, chromebooks are not designed for intensive tasks and by folding on them you risk lowering their lifespan for no significant benefit to anyone. A 100$ gpu does more work in an hour than a chromebook would do in a week, just plop one in to a random old pc with a pcie connector and use that.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Yeah, smart. School issued laptops are for school work. Not for gaming, folding or whatever else. Frankly, I'm amazed they even allowed you to run it in the first place.

Wanna fold on a Chromebook? Buy your own Chromebook.

I find it ironic that an education system started up the folding project yet you're sat there shitting on someone who just wants to use his education supplied laptop for good rather than sitting it on his desk and occasionally taking notes.

Give him a break please.

That's not a good excuse to abuse the hardware and current the school provides to you for free (or rather, thanks to other people's money through taxes). If you can't afford folding hardware that's just fine, don't do it.

The laptop would of been heavily discounted due to it being for Edu, also they probs got them tax free, lets not forget that most of them will be destroyed by kids with less intelligence than our OP here by pouring pop or licking the power sockets or whatever kids these days do.

Abuse? You can set the level of stress for folding you know? if OP sets it to low it will barely make it sweat...

I don't care if they paid 1$ for it, it is not his to do whatever he wants with. It is given to him for school related purposes, which do not include folding and certainly don't include risking to damage it. ANY level of constant stress is potentially harmful for a chromebook or in fact, pretty much any normal laptop. I am not saying the OP is a bad person for trying it, I'm trying to explain why he shouldn't. I certainly wouldn't compliment anyone for treating their chromebook (or any school provided hardware) carelessly.

In the event that I damage the chromebook I signed a paper stating that I am responsible if I cause the damage to it I'd pay about $250, even thought it cost $212 on Lenovo's website...

Aside from the fact that stress damage is more likely to show up months from now, when the laptop may be in the hands of someone else who won't have any idea why it randomly died on him, that's still not a good reason to abuse it... and if you're ready to spend 250$, as I said you can make a much bigger difference spending 100 of them on a cheap gpu.

I simply consider "education supplied laptop" same as "work provided laptop" and I'm not shitting on anyone here. It's simple thing, actually. Their hardware - their network - their rules. Fold all you want on your own computer and network, but as soon as one of those things isn't in your control, you're not the one who decides what you can and cannot do anymore. (Case in point, PCs in my home network can do anything. Anything on my guest network has everything blocked, just in case - except for web and mail mostly. My old University had eveyrhing unlocked and you could do anything on their network - up to the point they got sued by some copyright owners, because some students basically used it to download stuff from the net.

Also, they probably block all the protocols and lots of ports without exceptions or distinctions, because otherwise it would be hard or nigh impossible to control what's going on in the network. "Little exception for an educational project" would be quickly discovered and abused for everyone else.

Suffice to say, I fully support folding and other educational projects - I just think that everyone should do it with their own hardware and on their own network. Otherwise it's misappropriation and misuse.
