Unused wattage for Power supply?

gleggie
Go to solution Solved by STRMfrmXMN,

So I have a 750 watt power supply, but the only reason why I got it over a 500 watt or 600 watt was that it was the same price for more power.  However, I don't really need that much power, I probably only need about 450 Watts.  Is the computer always still drawing 750 watts and wasting it?  Or is it only drawing what it needs from the wall?

A PSU only donates as much power as needed. It sucks a bit more than that from the wall because of efficiency, but it never delivers more power than is asked of it.

no you are only losing efficiency. It draws as much as it needs

Never buy based on wattage. buy based on quality
if it was the same price chances are you got a lower quality PSU for your needs.

worse capacitors etc.

THIS. Also to add, to buy based on quality, check reviews on sites like tomshardware and jonnyguru.
