So yeah haven't had the time to catch up on tech over the last little because my life became really busy and I wasn't able to allocate the time to haning out on forums and reading up on this/ watching reviews.

 

So I know I've missed the Skylake launch. What should I know about it? (What CPUs are a good deal, did we get a 6 core on mainstream, what board types (like z87, b85, H87)  are they and which should one look at?) 

 

Also has anything else happend ? GPUs? 

 

 

Didn't know where to put this since this doesn't seem to fit into any category.

no 6 cores on main stream but for the SkyLake-E we will be getting 10 core I-7 chips and 22 core xeons. z170 for OC, B150, Q150, H170

Skylake is a decent platform for gamers; however, it's only a 10% improvement over Z97. Broadwell-E is expected to be released, and everyone should wait for that!

Broadwell-E has to come first. Skylake-E will be 2017 maybe.

well no 6 core yet :/ and its z170 h170, h110, b150, not much for gpu`s that i know of, for gaming the 6700k which is the i7 updgrade to the 4790k out performs the 5820k in gaming

Skylake not worth the money most of the time currently (unless sale price is great)

 

GPUs really haven't changed, same bickering between fanboys about rumors that haven't amounted to anything (yet) minus maybe the 380x coming out and the 960ti being announced

Same old same old; CPUs are faster but still too expensive for mainstream users, AMD/Nvidia pulling stupid BS, developers being morons, etc..

"Normandy" i7 4790K - GTX 970 - Phantom 410 (Gun metal) - Z97 Extreme4 (asrock) - 128GB Crucial SSD - 1TB WD HDD - H60 Refurb. - 7 case fans | G710+ Keyboard, G230 Headset, Acer GN246HL Monitor.

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.

Nothing much happened.

Pretty much everyone forgot about broadwell desktop, skylake came out this summer and offers a 5-10% improvement over haswell, and brings ddr4 to the mainstream. Only quad cores on mainstream for now (no 6 cores).

Broadwell e is coming out in q2, with a 10 core extreme edition, an 8 core and 2 6 cores. Amd zen is comming out q4 2016 (delayed due to poor yields), and should offer a significant improvement over bulldozer, while keeping a similar core count (+60% over current fx cpus).

For gpus.

Amd has come out with the r9 300 series, which is basically a refresh of the 200 series with more vram, an oc and power consumption improvements. They have also released their "fiji" gpus (fury lineup), with ultra fast stacked hbm ( though limited to 4gb for 1rst gen memory).

Amd greenland will be based on 14nm and come out in q3 supposedly, featuring hbm2 with over 1tb/s memory bandwith.

Nvidia have released the titan x, a gm 200 chip with 3072 cuda cores, a 980ti, basically a cut down version of the titan x.

Nvidia pascal is planned for q3-4 of 2016, and should feature hbm2 on higher end models, with lower end cards using gddr5X, a faster version of gddr5(that i guess is supposed to run faster without hitting the power requirements and heat out of the park)
