LOL before this even went from Vessel to YouTube, the raid controller already died and effed things up. Looking forward to Part 3, I guess.

As a unraid pro I have to agree.

Never need to look past unraid for anything nas related. I run Windows 10 on unraid virtualised and you honest wouldnt be able to pick up on it.

Hey Linus,

 

Congrats on joining the "actually 10gig" club !

 

It must feel so incredibly good to finally be able to saturate that sucker and finally get what you paid for (or worked for) and what is says on the tin.

 

Did you keep any notes on smb tuning that you can share ?

 

I kept going through your video frame by frame hoping I'd get a glimpse of your smb.conf or smbd flags, but other than a bunch of firefox tabs I got nothing (nice editing btw).

 

You mentioned smb tuning will be baked into an "upcoming release of unraid 6", any pointers to somewhere where we can track when those changes end up landing, e.g. a bug/issue number or something.

Congrats on joining the "actually 10gig" club !

It must feel so incredibly good to finally be able to saturate that sucker and finally get what you paid for (or worked for) and what is says on the tin.

Did you keep any notes on smb tuning that you can share ?

I kept going through your video frame by frame hoping I'd get a glimpse of your smb.conf or smbd flags, but other than a bunch of firefox tabs I got nothing (nice editing btw).

You mentioned smb tuning will be baked into an "upcoming release of unraid 6", any pointers to somewhere where we can track when those changes end up landing, e.g. a bug/issue number or something.

For what it's worth, I have a Melanox 10Gb card in an i7 4790k desktop and a Chelsio 10Gb card in an i3 4140 FreeNAS server with a 11x2TB Z2 vdev. I'm getting between 780 - 820 MB/s transfers using using SMB with ZERO optimization, didn't even enable jumbo frames.

 

Maybe something else amiss in your configuration that you didn't notice?

Then the 128GBs of ram to be the pre pre ssd server for even more speeeds.

The freenas problem is the SMB protocol.  It is sad that you found the forums snarky.  However while speeding up data to the workstations over smb would be a problem speeding up between the ssd server and the nas could happen by simply switching the protocol between the servers to nfs.  I do a lot of enterprise work in a mixed environment and there is a lot of unix on the back end serving windows and mac clients.  We use nfs a lot between the servers it is very capable without tuning of saturating 10gb links and does not tax the processors.  If linus media group is going to use unix variants on the backend (free nas, lime tech, ubuntu, etc...) you might want to think about how servers and nas systems communicate and how clients communicate and change protocols to match both.  If user machines are windows SMB is you only choice.  But consider having all your servers talk on a more efficient protocol like nfs or iscsi (though iscsi is a pain), you will be surprised how much faster the data moves.

 

In the end we all have hopes the larger open source community will get SMB to speed up but that who knows when and if that will happen.

When looking at this configuration did you have over 25 drives? How did you move past the limit in unraid? Is this due to the version you are currently running?

On the latter link, my personnal experience is that increasing the receive buffer is not such a good idea (at least on our 2 X520-DA2 and 2 X710-DA4 card hooked trough a used Arista 7124S grapped for almost nothing on ebay)

 

Anyway, those 10 GbE things are interesting more and more people and I hope you'll give more and more videos on that particular subject.

 

As for testing the link speed and sort out if it's the NIC, the drives, the software, etc... you can also use one of the reference tools for that call iperf :

This will easily let you sort out the pure network part of the performances ! once you know network is Ok, you can focus on the Samba / Drives / Filesystems
