Can this Gaming rig last for 3-4 years?

Shreyas1307

Hello all!

I'm building up a Gaming PC in the next coming weeks and I would like an opinion and if it can last for a few years till I'd need to invest/upgrade on better performance parts. I'm not looking to game at ultra high resolution, 720p or 1080p would be sufficient.

Parts List
Intel Core i7-4790k 4.0Ghz
Asus B85 Pro Gamer LGA 1150 Mobo

16 Gigs(2 x 8Gb sticks) of DDR3 Corsair 1600Mhz RAM
Asus STRIX GTX 960 With 4Gigs of GDDR5 VRAM
WD 1TB HDD

BenQ 21.5 inch Monitor GW2255

Corsair RM 750 SMPS

Cooler Master Storm Devastator Keyboard/Mouse

Cooler Master K380 Cabinet

An Optical Drive
Windows 10 OS

Let me know your thoughts on this! I would hope to run modern games on High settings. And please do suggest me the Gaming Titles I'd need to look out for as well as the perfect High (or Ultra High) Settings to achieve maximum performance with minimal fps drop :)

Thanks!

The 960 won't as it's mid range, unless you like low settings on the 4th year.

I'd go with an AMD card for lower-end cards. A 960 won't last you 4 years on high to ultra settings on a playable framerate, at least, that's what I envision.

The CPU will last you that long, hell a 4690k will

but the 960's a mid-range card, it's not going to last very long

Go for a 390; or get the 960 but realize that you will have to upgrade your GPU later on to keep up with modern titles of the future at the same settings as now.

You have a K series processor on a board that can't overclock.

The i7 is reducing your ability to get a decent graphics card.

With a single monitor you can likely get away with 8GB of RAM. It's easy to add more later.

There are better choices for power supplies.

No SSD? Seems like a huge mistake.

Without giving us a budget and your location we can't really help you.

For gaming, the stronger cores of an OC'd i5 are likely a better choice.

I don't mind if it will be running games on medium to low on the 3rd or 4th year. On a tight budget here. I was previously heading for the Asus Strix GTX 980, but found that it costed nearly a $900ish where i live whilst the 960 is about $300ish

Those AMD Radeon 290, 390s are similarly priced at $800+ :/ Hmm

I'd suggest getting AT LEAST a GTX 970. If you could get a 980, then you'll be enjoying those 4 years like a boss.

I got a GTX 780 2 years ago and it still plays games like GTA V and Fallout 4 like a dream.

Try to get an i5-4xxxk and use the savings to upgrade on the gpu.

With the above build, it's costing me over $1500 (I live in India). Hence the prices are ridiculously expensive. Appreciate the feedback from all of you, really does help alot!

The 960 is not a bad card, if you can stretch to a 4GB version do so, it may come in handy as the card ages.

Your question is very much up to interpretation,

1)do you want to last at high and above settings for 3-4 years on the newest titles? Or...

2)do you want to just have something that works well at playing current titles along with standard everyday workload and streaming without any noticeable overall slowdown for 3-4 years?

1)No. You need a better GPU than that 960 to do that. 390 would be a great pick or a 970 if power cost is an issue.

2) Yes. You'll be perfectly fine for longer! Just get at least an SSD for the boot drive and a couple applications that are important to have fast load times in!

Also note that this is a very common question asked for many years now, so it is usual to get as many answers and views on this topic as you are!

Your point 2 is exactly what i'm looking for! By the time I'm hitting year 3 with this card, I'm hoping i'd have saved up enough for an upgrade on the GPU

This I don't get. What would his amount of RAM have to do with how many monitors he is using?

If he has two he's more likely to have more apps running at once.
