4K or better specs?

IAmAndre

Hi there,

I'm trying to choose a laptop for my brother and I'm not sure which one of these I should get. He's going to use it for music creation and casual gaming. I have the choice between two Dell laptops :

- Inspiron 15 Series 7000 (€1100) : 16 GB of RAM, Core i7-5500U, 4K display, Radeon R7 M270 with 4GB of DDR3 memory

- Inspiron 15 Series 7000 New gen (€1000) : 8 GB of RAM, Core i7-6700U, 1080p display, GTX 960M with 4GB of DDR5 memory

So the new gen is a bit less expensive and has a better GPU and CPU, and enough RAM for his usage, but I want to know if having a 4K display is worth sacrificing the higher specs. Is it a huge deal on a 15 inch screen?

Thanks

Between those two, definitely get the second. But are these your only options? They aren't that great for the price, and U-skew processors aren't spectacular either :/

CPU - Intel i7-4790k | CPU Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO | Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-Z97-HD3 (Rev 2.0) | RAM - G.Skill Ripjaws X 16GB (2x8) DDR3-1866 | Storage - Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD | Graphics Card - EVGA GeForce GTX 980ti SC | Case - Fractal Design Define R5 w/Window (Black) | PSU - EVGA 750W B2 | Display - Acer K272HUL | Keyboard - E-Element RGB | Mouse - Logitech g502 | Sound - Klipsch ProMedia 2.1/Fostex TH-x00/Sennheiser HD595

4K on a 28" screen is pretty hard to read text on, it would be stupid on a 15" screen. You'd have to use scaling, which bugs out a lot.

I'd definitely go for higher specs than 4K. Anything over 1440p on laptops in pointless IMO.

you want a quadcore, not a dual-core low voltage i7 - go for a 6700HQ or 4720HQ and definitely the 960m

Get the better specs, That 4K laptop would struggle playing games on high.

Alright thank you all for your replies. I'll try to find something even better with a full HD display.
