980 Ti SLI overkill for 1440/1080 gaming?

98Redbird

Just completed a new build about a week ago:

X99 Sabertooth

5820k

32gb ddr4

2x 980 Ti in SLI

I game at 1080 through shield as i don't own a 4k tv and likely won't for the foreseeable future.

I also game at 1440 on an ASUS PB278Q 1440 60 hz monitor. I noticed that both in GTA5 and Fallout 4, that really only one card is being utilized. GPU 1 will run about 70-85% and card 2 will sit nearly idle at 4%-5% I crank everything up to Ultra/Max settings.

I guess I didn't quite think that one 980 Ti would perform quite THAT well.

I've got until Jan 31 to refund a card, and now am considering returning one and just running a single 980 ti.

I likely won't be doing any 4k gaming in the near future as stated before, but do want to be able to max the games out that I am playing, and am going to be playing.

Looking for suggestions.

Thanks!

At 1080p WHY. WHY WOULD YOU TEASE US PEASANTS?! At 1440p still over f***** powered but it won't be at 144fps xD And at 4K you'd be doing fine.

EDIT: If you posted a different thread in a different sub-thread with a different title of "1 GPU isn't being used in games! Help!" Then I guarantee people will see the problem and come running <3

No, it's not overkill- as you'll be able to use NVIDIA DSR to render your games at 4k, not only that but as games grow more intense in the coming years you'll have no problem destroying them too.

I struggle to see why you would even make this thread, aside from gloating that is

If you're not going to bother with 4k just yet then refund one while you still can.

Well fallout 4 doesn't support sli at all unless you mod the game files and gta v just doesn't like it. You will want sli for 1440p if you will be playing super demanding games like witcher 3 because on a single 980 ti maxed out it gets about ~50fps and over time games will just keep getting more and more demanding.

SLI works fine in Fallout 4 and my frame rates have nearly double in GTA 5.

I say keep the card. You may find a need for both later on.

That is strange since mine is higher boosted. How did you get that average? Do you have gameworks enabled?

Hairworks is off. Unoptimzed Crap that looks bad on Geralt. But i tweaked everything else way beyond the native Ultra.

Simple. Use DSR. 980Ti setup is no longer overkill on a 1080 panel. ;)

Why does it seem like I'm the only person suggesting and telling people about DSR/VSR? If you have a high-end GPU on a 1080 or 1440 display, this is a feature you'll want to take advantage of.
