Swapping my 970 for a 390.

Sounds like a good choice to me, the 390 will draw a fair bit more power though :)

Hi there everyone!

I've owned my MSI 970 for around a year now. This Saturday my friend is building a new PC. He went with the MSI 390.

Now, I've been thinking about getting an Asus MG279Q for my main monitor, and using my 1080p monitor right now as a secondary.

The reason I want to swap with him is Freesync, and the 8GB of Vram.

I talked to him a bit, and knowing he isn't using any adaptive sync technology, or not going to go to 1440p in the future, (He's not much of a techie), I proposed a deal. I'd be giving him my used 970 plus 20 bucks for his 390. Is my thought process correct here? I feel like this it totally worth it. The 390 performs a bit better in 1080p in certain games and most definitely performs better in 1440p, correct?

Should I go through with this so I can harness the power of Freesync and stuff, or is this a dumb decision?

It is definitely worth it if you want to be future-safe (don't mistake this with future-proof.)

I'd try to go higher tier in the process personally, like an AMD R9 Fury, but this is a good deal considering how much GTX 970s have depreciated.

The thing is, I'm getting it from a friend who lives just down the road. It's all I've got, and I think the 390 would fair me a lot better than the 970 in the upcoming years. But yes, a Fury would be nice. >_<

If you want free-sync, than it's worth it.

Good choice, though your an asshole who rips off your friend :P

I'm not ripping him off! I'm giving him 20 bucks with it, plus a bunch of nice Phanteks fans for his build, and hosting our LAN party. Frozen pizza FTW. ;)

Yeahhhh... I wouldn't want a year old gpu for my new one and $20 for an underperforming replacement.

Hey guys!! My buddy said he is willing to trade me his 1 year old GTX 970 for my brand new 390. It seems like a good deal because he is giving me 20$ and some frozen pizza. My thought process is this: I can buy 2 grams of weed with the 20$ and use the pizza for munchies!!!!!

Youre giving him an underperforming GPU thats over 1 year old for his new GPU that performs better. Thats called ripping someone off, and hes your friend, I dont mean to offend you but If you rip off your friends like that youre the kind of person I wouldnt want to know, hes dependant on you to give him advice... So yes thats pretty shitty.

Regardless on whatever you stand, that's also 1-year of warranty coverage.
