Should I go for 1440p or 144Hz for single player gaming?

hknutsen

I play single player games like BioShock Infinitie, Tomb Raider and Grand Theft Auto V. I have an i5-4690K @ 4.5GHz, 16GB DDR3, and a GTX 970 3.5GB. If it matters, I prefer to play these games with a controller.

Based on what I've read, 1440p is a huge upgrade from 1080p, and 144Hz shouldn't be important for single player games.

Well, with an i7, GTX 1080, Full tower and flashy lights, it can obviously only be for one thing:

Solitaire.

144hz is nice for games but 1440p is a massive step up graphically from 1080p, so I say that

1440p would definitely be a better option if you want a crispier image

Depends if you'll ever play online. If you'll only play single player games then 144Hz isn't really necessary.

1440 all the way.  Even on multiplayer, may not give you that extra bit of advantage, but the picture is worth it!

I disagree. The extra smoothness is apparent in everything you play. It's even a benefit for working in Windows, you notice how much smoother your mouse moves and the windows drag. Just because it improves your multilayer game doesn't mean you don't enjoy the fluid motion in a car game, or in dota, or fallout... You just need to decide I how important that smoothness is for you. It's still very very nice.

It all comes down to graphics vs performance which is more of a personal choice at the end of the day. Based on the games he mentioned, it would make sense to take the graphical path and a get a 1440p monitor. Maybe for someone like you, that may not be the case.

Given the choice of 1080p@144phz and 1440@60 I would choose 1080@144p every single time. The smoothness that comes from having a faster refresh rate is something you notice all the time, all other computers are going to feel slow after you have used 144hz for a few weeks. Its not just about games, you will notice it in windows on mouse movement and dragging windows its really quite an experience change for a PC. Extra pixel density I can live without (I don't I have 1440@165 on a PG279Q), refresh rate currently is a much bigger image quality improver than pixel density.

Just no . I have a 1440p 144hz monitor with GTX 970 and I play GTA V on Very High settings, very smoothly. VRAM hits close to 3.5GB and sometimes goes over, there is no noticeable difference. The same goes for other recent games, the GTX 970 is more than capable. OP go 1440 you'll be fine.

Fully maxed out early 2017 Dell XPS 15, GTX 1050 4GB, 7700HQ, 1TB nvme SSD, 32GB RAM, 4k display. 97Whr battery :x
Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

-Crapbook

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.
