R9 390 Fallout 4 Optimization

Matt_Twinkletoes

Look, instead of spreading hate all day long, return or sell your cards, get a 970 and be done with it. Or just be a reasonable consumer, wait a day or two and enjoy your cards for christ's sake...

Where did I spread hate, you don't like my opinion and that's fine, but if you check my posts nothing I said isn't backed by evidence or said in a way not fair to both cards. I give the 390 credit where it is due.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

You're claiming AMD should go out of business and that the 390 is worse than a 970 when that is true for only 2% of the cases. Sorry you can't enjoy Fallout 4 day one but this is why we do not buy day one.

This is part of the reason I swapped from AMD to Nvidia (290x's to 980ti's) The driver support just makes it for me. We have had 2 Fallout 4 drivers so far and AMD hasn't had one.

Its seriously something to consider when going down the AMD route (Drivers take awhile and are often buggy)

Two drivers says a lot, y'know. Something pretty damn bad.

Check out my guide on how to scan cover art here!

 Please allow me to calm your nerves and offer the simple truth that my opinion of AMD will have no consequences to AMD.

The topic is the optimization of Fallout 4 in the context of the R9 390. As I happen to own a R9 390 I'd say that should allow me to voice my concerns, and when it has been proven that the R9 390 performs significantly worse than the 970 it's competitor, that should be discussed not hidden so as to not hurt the feelings of someone with brand loyalty.

Not buying a game the day it launches because the manufacturer of the graphics card is slow with drivers, is not a defense of that manufacturer, it is a social commentary of the customers. It highlights why those drivers come late, a lack of pressure from the customers. If rather than defending AMD, you placed that frustration where it belongs and help those of us pressing for a change in AMD's behavior. The next launch might go differently, and your warning of not playing a game at launch would become obsolete.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

I am currently primarily an Nvidia user and I am voicing my frustration with being stuck on the August WHQL driver since the newer ones refuse to work properly.

I've not experienced issues directly related to the drivers with AMD recently - the driver not being there is not something to complain about unless it's been too long - 2 days is by far not long or late - Nvidia has taken longer before.

I did my whole first playthrough of Witcher 3 without the driver for it - played on low 60fps - 2nd time I played on medium 52 fps - I don't care if I get medium or high settings or 45 fps or 60 fps - All I care is I can enjoy the game. From what I'm reading - if you turn off godrays and tone down HBAO+ you'll be perfectly fine. I payed 250$ for my 280 which is now on it's way to the scrap heap yet I don't really care. Shit happens - nobody is perfect.

Shit happens is an admission of acceptance. I avoid using that phrase as a customer as it enables the person I'm in a business relationship with. People forget as a customer you're part of that business, don't hand over your portion of the control because once you do you'll be saying shit happens a lot.

Outside of Lexington I don't have an issue, inside Lexington no setting outside those you would find on a console so lower than I'm willing to go work. Once the fps dip below 30 the game is unplayable. You get massive shuttering and control lag. Just about every person who has reviewed this game confirms my observations. You can also tell there's a massive issue in the fact a 970 not only beats a 390, but a fucking Fury.

Sorry you find the whole mess frustrating, trust me I'm right there will you and then some. You're not the person responsible for that frustration, AMD is responsible for that frustration and to a lesser extent Bethesda. AMD is my primary concern, Bethesda will replace them once the driver issue is resolved. And if AMD chooses to not support Fallout 4 I will get a refund for the game from someone and resolve the issue myself. I keep saying, this isn't me angry, I will get that refund.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

It's more of a case of I don't really blame someone for something unless it's a recurring theme - Nvidia have crappy drivers for mobile users - this is the 3rd one that is unusable in a month.

AMD take a few days after a gameworks title released - it's mainly fixing up holes in GW/Game code. I remember and interview with them and they were talking about APUs and why Intel can't match them. I believe the guy said something along the lines of; "You won't believe in what state we receive the code, it's leaking, buggy, it's a mess. We have a large back catalog of fixes for various issues in games that we simply implement" - thanks to gameworks, new fixes are needed since it's new forms of intentionally unoptimized code so I just say give them at least 5 or 6 days - they deserve that much. If the issues aren't fixed or a driver isn't out in a week's time then by all means call them out but you can't expect them to work day in day out - they have families too, they need to cool off too. The driver team is human like us and they are doing what they can. That goes for AMD and Nvidia both - I called out Nvidia after I had multiple issues with multiple drivers. Why? It's something getting ignored. As for the FO4 driver we've yet to see what happens - hence why I am getting frustrated when I see posts along the lines of "they can't do this, they should shut down" - it's not really an easy job - if it were, we'd not need them, we'd make our own drivers for the hardware.

I worked for a developer, I know what it's like. I know they'll say anything to throw the blame off of themselves. You should have been there with some of the updates we released, you think I'm mad, you have no idea  . When the players joined forces and went to the developer as a group, things happened in a matter of hours.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

I have no doubt they're covering their assess - Nvidia spent about a week pointing fingers at AMD and the Tomb Raider devs but when nobody bought it they fixed the driver overnight. I'm just saying a week is reasonable.

A week is reasonable, I however am not but will power down. I'll even hide my Fallout 4 icon so as to not taunt me.

That's all I was asking for from the get-go :D - if it's the same on November 17/18 then by all means call them out - I will back you up.

Setting the shadows to medium and the God Rays to high did the trick, haven't dropped below 50fps yet. Still would be nice for a driver update that allows for better settings, and crossfire. Got two feet of GPU just itching to make video game porn.

the GTX 970 will remain a great card for the next couple years if you stick to 1080p gaming...the 390 is also good.

We can't say for sure if the AMD will be better than nvidia in DX12 since nvidia has not worked on DX12 ready drivers yet...so all we seen so far are cards trown in the ring with no good compatible driver sets for them running early developpement unfinished piece of softwares...if you think this is a good indicator of what is upcoming for DX12 then that's alright, for me personaly i will consider DX12 performance to be sorted out once a few DX12 based games will have come out and nvidia will have a couple DX12 gameready drivers under the belt...THEN i think we will be able to judge how well nvidia cards react in a low  CPU overhead environment. So far they tested two early piece of software with non DX12 ready drivers and said: here AMD react better they gaing a few frames and nvidia is not...which is a bit expected since AMD has been working on mantle drivers for quite some time already and their DX11 drivers are certainly a limitation for the cards right now since they see that performance increase in DX12...now what will happen when nvidia will have a DX12 optimised driver for an actual game to be released under DX12 remain to be seen but IMHO they will also get a nice boost once they start optimising the code for DX12.

Only time will tell..it's a wierd time to buy a new GPU to be honest...AMD might not be here at the same time next year...nvidia could crap out and remain to this level of performance under DX12 too this is also possible...we don't know it's too early to tell.

All i can say is that with the CPU and powersupply that you have in your rig right now, if you don't want to upgrade those i honestly think the 970 will serve you better...well, at least as well since both cards perform very similar in the games you've mentionned.

LOL!!! th 390 is better and you still go on about the 970...Jeez.

As far as I'm aware the only reason Nvidia releases driver patches constantly is because they're buggy. AMD certainly was bad before but now when they release drivers at least they aren't buggy.

Since there is no driver support Crossfire yet, I just run single card in 3840X2160....But the results really surprised me because I can run Fallout4 in 3840X2160 and high settings(FXAA) and run in around 45 fps...Which is really funny because even if I set the resolution to 2160X1440, or 1920X1080, I still couldn't get 60 fps...So I guess this game has some bug itself and not my GPU's fault. So my suggest? I think you should wait untill Bethesda fix this problem

Generally, lightning effects take alot of performance. Turn those settings down. But you can keep textures settings on ultra.

Oddly enough my game runs good on medium to low..but when it comes to rendering the world...It causes major lag spikes that I have to wait a minute and a half to stop the lag spikes and for it to finish rendering.....You seen my cpu and gpu but I wonder if the ram is the culprit since I have only have 4GB
