What distro do you run and why?

Guest

I've ran a poll in my signature for a while now, asking people what distro they run, but I was curious, why?

http://strawpoll.me/4518443/r

Please include

- Why you picked your distro over others

- How long you've used it

- Your favorite part

- Where you are running it (VM/Desktop/Laptop/Phone???)

- What are your primary uses for it?

- What desktop environment?

I'll start, I've ran Arch Linux in a VM for about 5 months now, primarily because 1. it teaches a lot about the core of linux and 2. its insanely customize-able. 3. it's fast. there's not preinstalled crap I don't need.

My favorite part is getting all the new features quickly, even though I risk instability. I primarily use it for web browsing, bash practice, and researching the non-windows side of C++

I used to use Fedora Linux, just cause I liked it more than Ubuntu. Also to run MC servers, which for some reason performed better on Linux.

I used to be quite active here.

Mostly Ubuntu or Mint but I'm moving to arch.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

I recently started running Ubuntu on a VM and noticed that it looks very similar to OSX. Haven't done anything on it yet though

I used Ubuntu as my first distro and never once noticed that. I've never heard anyone else say that either. Are you using the unity de?

I use Ubuntu, right now I am using 14.04 on my daily machines but my server is running an older version(10.04) and I will be installing 15.10 on machines soon. I've been using Ubuntu since 9.04, however I have used Windows 7 alongside it so its not like I am fully a Linux user. My favorite part is everything, simplicity, command line features, no product key, and lots of options. Right now I have it running on a VM on my workstation, but my main desktop and laptop run it naively. I mostly use Ubuntu for browsing the web and documents.

Edit: My DE is Unity, I like it.

Fell in love with Ubuntu MATE. Unity is horrible, MATE is so customizable and beautiful! :) I've been running it as my main OS in my laptop for 2 months I think, and I don't see that changing.

It's an open source enterprise platform, it is linked with Red Hat :)

(although, I never used it for enterprise type things)

I've been thinking about doing an article on that on my work in progress website, something like how to set up a raspberry pi for multiple pentesting practice scenarios/experiments

I think gnome 3 is worse than unity :/, love mate though its great.

It's fun forcing into wireless networks. (Only mine of course for the learning experience. Not others as it is illegal.)

I still use windows too pretty much only because of games. That, and graphics drivers are a pain. I've been long considering making a program called "Just F***ing Install It" that handles all the manual-install packages without too much thought

I used Ubuntu for roughly two years before I built my second build. This was years ago, but Ubuntu 10.4 ran like greased lightning on an Athlon64 X2 and a 7200rpm hard drive.

Wanted to move back for a while but... Windows really kills you with convenience. Though, after Microsoft confirmed that they have telemetry on everyone and that they are trying to stop people taking them down...

Linux is gonna take over the world in the next few years. Can't wait. Windows is on its last legs.

Antergos with GNOME.  I plan on switching to Ubuntu sometime, though.

- I wanted a rolling-release distro, and this is just Arch pre-configured.

- About a year now.

- Rolling-release.

- Desktop.

- Gaming, web browsing, IRC.

- GNOME 3.

-snip-

I use Ubuntu for now, I am a long time user of it since about 2010. I use Ubuntu because I like Unity and it's look and feel. Ubuntu has a large support base and supports a large variety of hardware like most of Linux does. My favorite part about Ubuntu is Unity, I just really enjoy the transparent effects it has with the wallpaper and the large, touch friendly icons. I use Ubuntu as my daily driver on my laptop, and as the secondary os on my desktop. I mostly use Windows for a few games and Word. I'll probably continue using Ubuntu as long as it stays a way I like it. Luckily Linux is very flexible and I can adapt to something new repetitively easy if a time does come where I no longer enjoy Ubuntu.

Lord of Helium.
