Old HDDs Magnets?

So.. I have like 5-6 HDDs around. 138MB - 80GBs lol. How would one get the magnets out? May keep one as a coaster.

The magnets or the platter(s)? Either way you have to open up the case of the HDD and pull it (them) out. It's not that hard, but you'll probably need a Torx head screwdriver.

Just unscrew all the screws on the top. Most are hidden under a little foil cover. then you just take the top off and you will see the magnets. There is like 2 screws then just brute force to get them out. Also don't get your fingers between the magnets it hurts they are very powerful. Also don't get them remotely close to a phone or anything with flash memory including hard drives.

The magnets have a little metal plate on them in which it's hard to get them off.

My Stepdads dad was a mechanic, of I cannot get it off we have some high emd power tools.

That's not an issue, NAND gates are impervious to magnetic fields. A magnet powerful enough to draw the electrons out of a NAND gate would also be powerful enough to suck the iron out of your blood vessels.

As I have done this before and am currently using a hard drive platter as a coaster, a simple torx screwdriver is generally all you'll need. There might be different sized torx screws in there, but that's mostly it. If something doesn't come out easily, it means there's a screw somewhere holding it down.

Good grief, I never knew the magnets in HDDs were that powerful. I didn't think they were very strong at all (then again, I've only ever taken apart a laptop drive).

These magnets in HDD's are rare earth neodymium magnets.  These are the strongest commercially available permanent magnets.  Just having them an inch apart can severely damage your finger when caught.
