it is true. it took many years to wear mine down to the point where i could actually do stuff. younger siblings have it so much easier. they have no idea :P

Yeah, took me a few years. 

 

Then again, for me, I was really addicted to these games. I would've spent all day on the games if I could. As I got more mature and wouldn't spend all day on games and actually was interested in things like Photoshop, I was able to start playing more... it really depends on your parents tbh

Tell them if your grades are good you should be able to play longer. I can play as long as I want as long as I get mostly A's and B's . Also $1000 is the MAX you have to spend. At 12 all I did was playing minecraft lol and farming sim 2013. You could get away with a $700 PC, decent i5 and R9 380 which will be more than enough to last you 2-3 years.

Say that you're a good student, and ask them if they will let you play a bit longer if your grades stay the same. If your grades lower, they can always go back to the rule :)

My parents used to have that for me, like ULTRA OCD about it, but in secondary school they kinda stopped doing it.

My mom did it to me when she got into fights with me, that and when I used to get bad grades (but that doesnt happen anymore ;))

And plus, Im using a computer that she didnt really contribute to money-wise at all. So for her to take it away or limit my use on it, kinda not her best call, though I still listen to her when she says "get off" at like 3AM or something.

Well you can fiddle around with more things using a PC

You can go beyond the realm of video games and explore coding or CAD

 

I personally have the same issue, but I started finding other useful ways to use my PC

I could finally learn C# and even do 3-d modeling

 

A PC does more than video games

I've tried all the grade stuff, it hasn't got anything to do with grades for me  :mellow: they just dont want me using my free time to play vg

I'm not sure, as you didn't respond to it, but did you try any of the things I suggested on the first page of this thread?

Ok. They didnt have the MSI board in stock. Will this Gigabyte GA-H97N-WIFI be good? Or do you any other black mini itx suggestions

Yup, thank you for the suggestions. My dad only played video games when he was in his early 20's, he played ALOT.Anyway, I only really play when my friends are online (private tf2 matches :D )  and he knows that. He doesn't mind me playing, but he just doesn't really want me to get into a routine of playing all day, nearly every day (understandable). I asked why he doesn't want me to play longer than that and he told me its mostly just for the years im in now where my brain is developing the most. I can use my pc for anything apart from that whenever i want, and they don't give damns. I think he's just more sensitive on the arena type games i play. Like i said on the post, a few posts ago, my dad is a programmer so i could use that as an advantage (creds to DatSpeed  :P).

this can be a good way to do it, show them you will maintain your grades and still play more etc, if your grades slip you will follow the rules until you recover

Yeah, in a way, I can understand where he's coming from. When it comes to video games, the 12-year-old-angry-kid is one of the biggest stereotypes there is. He most likely knows of that stereotype, and doesn't want you to start falling into that category.

I'd suggest you get the computer, and build it around being up-gradable. That way, you'll have a fast computer for what you need to do now, and you'll have a good computer to upgrade once you can play for longer periods of time.

It sounds like your parents aren't going to budge on this, and from a certain standpoint, I can see why. They only want the best for you, and they want you to have a good future. Develop your skills now, and prove to your parents that you won't be living in their house at 30 years of age. Once you prove you have good work ethics, they should let you play for longer. If not, well, find another hobby. You can make a decent amount of money doing freelance coding/GFX/Photoshop online, so that's something you can do to earn money to upgrade your PC, and purchase other things.

Best of luck with your father, he sounds reasonable.

Not that I don't play for 2 hours+ when I come back from school. :)

Thank you  :)  I have a VERY small time job of fixing friends/family/family-friends phones, laptops, tablets and just tech stuff really. Thats how i've earned so far + selling ps4. I had a CRAZY addiction to Destiny, i couldn't stop thinking about it. That might have something to do with the problem  :D. And yes, my dad knows about the stereotype, he's quite up to date on that stuff  ;)  Thanks for the help

How about show them you deserve more. My parents never had this rule so I would game for like 5 hours every school night and all day and night during the weekend but now I am in Highschool I am lucky to grab 30 minutes during the week. I am just too busy doing homework, teaching, studying, and editing videos. The weekend is a different story but I only game for about 5 hours and Sunday is the day I do homework. I can say it only makes it better. Hearing about some new update or another thing but having to wait makes you love it that much more. If you want to get more time do chores or other tasks showing you are mature enough to use your time in a wise manner.

Its all good. I had similar issues with my parents when I was younger, and It took me over a year to prove I could play video games without becoming addicted.

I used to be addicted to Minecraft. I had to go cold turkey for over 7 months before I started playing again. The fact that your actually SOLD your PS4 shows you're far more mature than average, so good job on that.

Learning to repair/build computers/other technology is a VERY useful skill, that you should try to develop as much as you can. There will always be computers in the world, and knowing how to fix them is somewhat like learning how to fix a car. Just the other day I updated all of the computers to windows 10 in a local school, and was payed rather well for my time.

Good luck with furthering your skills, you'll be happy you spent the time to do so.

It sounds like you're treating gaming as a hobby, and appropriately treating as such. If they don't care if you spend 17 hours doing other hobbies, they shouldn't care if you want to spend a bit playing games.

Within reason of course.

You may be the wisest I've met so far on my journey through ltt :P . I'll keep up the fixing and start doing a little more constructive to show him I can use my free time wisely aswell. He just doesn't want me to start relying on videogames for when I'm bored

If you want more computer based work, try and see if your school needs a computer technician. Most schools don't have one, and I know of several people on this forum that are their schools computer technician. Ask around, make it known that you're good at computer based work, and you might just find a few part-time jobs to do.

From what I've read, it would seem you already don't rely on video games for entertainment. Try and ask your father for a trial period of sorts. As for 2/3 hours a day, and if doesn't work out, than you go back to one hour with no argument. That's what i did, and here I am doing computer related stuff for almost all day(Homeschooling is awesome in that way).
