December Gaming Build Dilemma

Hi everyone,

I've got this gaming build planned out, and I'm gonna build it at the start of December. However, I also wanted to explore my options using the Skylake/Z170 platform. I know that the platform comes with a tonne of advantages, but I'm not sure I can make the equivalent build listed below with the new stuff WITHOUT going over my budget of $3000 AUD.

So this is my build as it stands: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/8q9KjX

*I know the budget in that list is over $3000, but I'm positive that my local parts dealer will do me a deal if I get everything from them.

My local parts dealer (IT Warehouse, Adelaide) was not helpful at all when it came to picking similar parts, as the sales assistant from Hell I was stuck with seemed to know very little about computer parts (less than I do, which is saying something) and couldn't seem to spell my name correctly even once, EVEN THOUGH IT'S IN THE DAMN EMAIL.

So should I stick with the cheaper 4th gen platform and upgrade to Skylake in a few years, or should I manage my budget, change the graphics card ( :() and the case ( :(), and go for Skylake gold now? If I went with the latter, the build would look something like this:

- Intel Core i7 6700K 4GHz quad-core processor

- Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM liquid CPU cooler

- Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound

- MSI Z170a Krait edition motherboard****

- Corsair Vengeance White 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4

- Samsung 850 EVO 120GB SSD

- Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" HDD

- MSI GTX 980 4GB Gaming  :(

- Probably NZXT case, phantom 410 maybe?

- Corsair RM 850W 80" Gold PSU

- LG optical drive 'cuz I'm in South Australia, land of bad Internet

- Window 10

- BenQ RL2455HM 60Hz 24.0" Monitor

*I chose that board because of the colour scheme I could go with. However, the SATA ports aren't rotated 90 degrees like on most boards - won't a second card in SLI block them off? And if I go with a regular 980, I'm gonna need two eventually.

I also know that the GTX 980 Ti in the PC part picker list would be wasted with that monitor, but I'll upgrade later to 1440p/IPS/60Hz.

Please help me out, tell me I'm an idiot if you have to, just do what you gotta do.

Hi everyone,

You could get a locked i7, which would save you money on the CPU cooler as well, and unless you're running a 144hz display won't matter all that much for gaming

And I'd recommend a Fury over a 980, as a free-sync display is going to cost less than a G-sync display, and unless that display is really cheap just get whatever is IPS and 1080p

Otherwise the HAF XB Evo is just about the best case ever

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?
